I guess I just can't comprehend that kind of giving up. I really didn't think it was humanly possible to just let yourself die. I know it isn't in me to do that. I guess I have seen similar events with the elderly but this guy was relatively young.

No, I can't get my head round it either CS. Like you, I've heard of it in the elderly and I suppose there's no explaining it. Sad really that someone feels they have nothing in their life worth living for.

It doesn't sound as if he were truly "Homeless" but may have been on the way there. He apparently still had his apartment. Becoming Homeless is really depressing. Loss of Job, no money,unable to find someone to "learn the ropes" from, Shame,fear of rejection,.... could be a LOT of things that contributed to the overall situation. He also had a pre-existing medical condition with seizures..... Sad but it happens. Add to that the fact that he might not have been able to get any food,with maybe no Homeless program in place.
There were times when I was homeless that I just didn't feel like leaving camp, once or twice for days at a time.

People may never know, but to me it appears that he gave up and wanted to die.
