If you were told about a severe storm that would just devestate your property, and it was suggested that you leave, would you go?

If not, why?

If you would leave, what would you take?

Frank, it depends on the type of storm.

Up my way, devastating winter storms are the most frequent, and the really bad ones come about 10 years apart. Still, nothing more than an inconvenience for me.

Hurricanes are next, and the last really bad one was in 1954.

I'm a few miles from the coast, and my land is 150' above sea level. I guess that I would move if a 200+ feet high tsunami (from the Canary Islands, maybe?) was on the way, but not much more would get me to leave.

Why? Because I'm much more prepared, in pretty much every way, for these things than the government is. I've worked with local, state, and federal FEMA agencies and believe me, they DO NOT have a lot of assets to spread around.

Evacuation would be a nightmare in any densely populated area. I've seen the plans for my region, and I'd probably be stuck on the road with anything less than 48 hours lead time. My place is suburban/rural. In order to leave, I either have to drive through cities or over a bridge and onto an island. I'd rather stay put right where I am.

I'd probably stay for the same reasons Ken cited... 'cept I'm further from coast...it'd hafta be a REALLY big Tsunami... like the moon crashing into the ocean or something, at that point I'd be pretty screwed anyways..

I have taken the Elevation: 61 feet where I am, (approx 30 miles in land from Atlantic) into consideration, the bugaboo is that between me and the ocean it averages 13 feet no major land features. With dependents, I think that in the event of a monster hurricane , the surge and resultant population displacement, I would be in an untenable situation. If I were alone, I would stay in place

Frank, going strictly by your scenario, I would leave. My wife and I have an evacuation plan that we would follow. My bigger truck has a full set of camping gear in it all the time. We basically add food, water, fire arms, ammunition, important papers, external hard drive, phone numbrs, etc. The important thing is that as long as I am with my wife, and we are safe - we'll recover. My most important job is to keep her safe.

Hurricane Hugo taught me my Double wide may not be a safe place so I am building a cellar I have the roof which is made of 2"X4"X.250" steel tubing and all welded, it will keep us here and allow for a quicker recovery by staying home to gather our stuff after the storm. If one hit now we have the irrigation ditch on the property line we could wait it out in. Reminds me I need a plan for our horses too...

in all likelyhood we would leave. I joke as well as others ( rick,crash,Poco,pvg,hoosier to name a few) who have seen my BOV/BOT. In less than 5 minutes we can hook to trailer, toss in the remaining firearms, laptop, pets, wife's meds. etc. and be on the road. with food, water, shelter, clothing etc. for us, pets. For a minimum of 10 days. The house, furniture, etc. Can be replaced. I have all our photo's, inportant paperwork, etc. both on my laptop as well as on disc, both with my computer and in safe deposit box at bank.

I don't have any place I could go better than where I am now. Would take a freak tornado and a direct hit to move the top floor, rest is 2 sides completely underground, front up to the bottom of the windows and if it floods me out the East Coast will be gone.

Sure I'd go. Toss my BO stuff in the truck and roll. Everything in the house is "stuff". I wouldn't want to lose any of it but it's just "stuff". I think we get too attached to "things" and forget that we can't be replaced and the "stuff" can be.

Well where I am my choice is basically between tornado in the warm months or blizzards in the winter months. In both situations I think I'm better off hunkering down and waiting them out. I've got everything stockpiled well enough that I could sit out a pretty good while if I had to, if I had to leave it'd be me and the WonderMutt, if I can get him to come out from under the bed when the storm's hitting (yep, my hero)

i dont own my own house right now but if i did id have the same answer.
if i could (asuming the roads arent backed up or if i had my own house that it wasnt to fare out in the middle of no where to make it out in time) id leave because it wouldnt be a big deal. this house isnt mine and if i had my own house it would be a little cabin that i could rebuild and if i stayed it wouldnt stop anything for being destroyed anyways. id take almost everything because i dont have much to take and most of what i do have and would have is useful stuff.
