Passion Flower

I was working out in the yard today and noticed that some of the Passion Flowers were in bloom. Thought I’d share the pictures. It’s kind of interesting that before I had any interest in wild edibles I looked at growing plants, trees and weeds in a whole different way. I just have a couple of vines growing, and have never notice the fruit (passion fruit) growing on them before – but then again, my eyes were not fully open.

we call them maypops down here. generally considered a nuisance plant by those who don't know any better, but then so are dewberry brambles lol. really good pics. be sure to snap some pics of the fruits when ripe too!

Passion Flower is on the list of things to try. 115 frost free days a year should make it a chore. Rocks make a great heat sink and a blanket of straw should protect the roots. Does it flower all summer or later in the season? Nice pics.

Around here they bloom most of the summer.

I've got a pretty huge passion flower vine growing here, the third year since transplanting a shoot.
But in the third summer, I've only go two fruits. They are kind of like oblong green oranges. They feel sort of hollow. After hanging on the vines for over two months, they show no sign of ripening.
Anybody know when these things are supposed to ripen up?

maypop is a specific type of passion flower. its one of the most cold hardy of them

passion fruit cake is awesome. ive seen one fruit that was purple and half the size of my head. most ive seen were yellow and a little bigger then an egg. different types make diff fruits. the flowers are psychedelic....apparently :innocent:.

not quite phychedellic per se, some contain a minimally phychoactive Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor, which when taken in conjunction with any of a broad range of monoamine neurotransmitters, including many psychedellics [Phenethylamines, Tryptamines] will protect them from various enzymes, preventing their metabolism, and therefore keeping them active in the system longer and thus potentiating their effects.

some also contain potentially dangerous levels of cyanogenic glucosides [like cassava does]

well, some MaOIs seem to cause mild phychoactive effects, up to and including enhanced perception of color depth, richness of sound and euphoria [like a mild phychedellic tryptamine or phenethylamide intoxication]. a good example of this is syrian rue [Peganum harmala], for which there are a great many accounts of mild psychedellic intoxication.

caution should still be recommended, as certain dietary restrictions apply to any MaOI, and as mentioned, some species of Passiflora contain cyanide compounds [i don't know which, or in which part[s] of the plant they are found].
