I'm starting a pot of .......well....I'm not sure if it's gonna end up as soup or stew. (Isn't stew, just thick soup?)
Here's what I started with.
2 large potatoes
half a head of cabbage
1 pound of smoked sausage
1 can diced tomatoes (Yeah, I know....canned veggies.)
1 can whole corn
1 can cream style corn
1 can baby lima beans
about 5 good shakes of the salt and pepper shakers
enough water to cover stuff

OK....what should I add????
Ketchup?
BBQ sauce?
Wosha....worches.....some Lee&Perrins?

Edit; I forgot to a say that I like stuff a little spicy, but my other half does not...so, I tend to lay off the onions, peppers, and go kinda easy on the spices.

You might try some bay leaf and some garlic powder.

A handful or two of barley.

You have to put the barley in the soup/stew. Just holding it won't work.

Didn't find any garlic powder in the cabnet. The best I could do was a shake of garlic salt and a pinch of minced garlic.

I also didn't find any bay leaves.....but then it hit me.......I have a row of wax myrtle on my back property line! (Thanks Poco!):innocent:

Man, It's a good thing I didn't have any barley. I would have been embarrassed, standing there with 2 hands full of it, when Rick posted that!:blushing:

How about some macaroni or other small pasta shape? turn it into a minestrone stew! My speciality, I always start off making minestrone soup, but it always ends up stew! (I get a bit carried away adding things):blushing:
Then there's dumplings too!

WW, Fishing was great! I take fishing alot more seriously than most and as time has passed from the simpler times of my youth I have invested in too much equipment! Also the hunt for a trophy had replaced what was my true love of just a simple fishing trip. It had gotten to a point where I really just wanted to go back to the basics and go fishin'! So we did, none of the fish were worth bragging about but the enjoyment factor was increased ten fold. I have a few pics from the trip. I will try and post them later this evening. Don't get me wrong, there is still that side of me that will always want to outdo my previous best!

It's seems to me that too many cooks can spoil the broth. If anyone likes, they can use that saying. I don't get a royalty on it or anything. I come up with gems like that from time to time.

Looks good 2D I might add a couple of chopped carrots and maybe a few green beans. If you want it thicker Masa' flour works better than plain flour and tastes better as well IMHO I'll also post a good "cheat" (crockpot) chicken noodle soup recipe for ya if you or anyone wants it

What?! Not a single mention of QC? Me thinks our QC department is getting a wee bit lax. Perhaps it's time for a shake up in the ranks. New blood?

Think about it. Winnie appointed 2D2K the head of QC of the overseas group. Don't forget - it is 2D2K that is cooking it - notice there were no objections to the addition of Alpo.

First, let me say thanks to those who offered ideas. I may try some of them the next time.

WW messed me up, with the thought of dumplings! Now I want a big ol' pot of chicken and dumplin's!

All I added to my soup was a little more pepper and a lot more salt. After that, all that soup needed....was eatin'! (I had three bowls of it.) :innocent:

LOL, last night, when my other half came home, she took a big wiff and asked "did you cook cabbage?". (She doesn't like cabbage.)

I told her that it was soup, and that it just had a little cabbage in it. She turned her nose up, and finally got about a half a bowl, of it. Then she went back and got another bowl.....full. This morning, she took a big tupperware bowl full of my soup, to work with her. I guess it didn't taste too bad! LOL:innocent:

Orzo is, without a doubt, on the par with rice cakes. There is no way you can cook it to give it any taste. I've tried any number of ways. It's never good and never bad. It's just so danged bland.

Okay, 2dumb, I'm gonna' send you a bill for this advice..........

If you like cabbage soup, try this:

1 pound Kielbasa sliced ¼" thick.
OR 1 pound of Sirloin Tips cut into bite sized pieces
1 Chopped Head of Cabbage
1 Small onion Chopped
2 quarts Chicken Broth
1 16 ounce can lima beans
Salt and pepper to taste

Bring broth to a boil.
Add all ingredients.
Keep at rolling boil for 5 minutes and reduce to simmer.
Simmer for 1 Hour.

To serve, tear a large loaf of round bread* into small chunks and add 4 or 5 chunks to each bowl of soup.

* This kind of bread, 2dumb:

Chicken Noodle Soup

* 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 pounds of chicken pieces (I use boneless chicken breasts)
* 4 cups of water
* 4 cups of chicken broth
* 1 teaspoon seasoned salt
* 1 teaspoon salt
* 1/4 teaspoon pepper
* 1 small onion
* 2 chopped carrots
* 2 stalks of celery chopped
* 1/4 cup of parsley chopped
* 1/2 teaspoon dried marjoram or basil ( I use basil)
* 1 bay leaf
* 8 oz. wide egg noodles

Preparation

Place all ingredients EXCEPT the noodles in a crock pot. Cover and cook on LOW for 5-6 hours. Remove chicken and bay leaf from pot. dice the chicken and return to pot. dispose of bay leaf. Add the noodles to the crock pot and cook for about 1/2 hour or so until the noodles are done. Or cook the noodles separately and add to soup just before serving.

You can "spice up" the soup by adding mushrooms or green beans or what ever your favorite veggie is.
