Did a search on this subject, didn't come up with anything.
I have tried chicory and found it O.K., don't know it it would satisfy an "few" cup a day habit.

Did find a lot of "coffee stretchers", but all depended on having coffee to stretch.
Any thoughts?

I have been told that your offbrand coffees are fortified with Chickory, I beleive it, as I made the switch from Folgers and Maxwell House this year and at first it isn't OK then OK then well I like coffee alot!

I've had chickory coffee at a rendevous several years ago. Was all chickory, If that was all that was available( keep in mind I MIGHT drink a ouple dozen cups of coffee a YEAR) ( i drank more coffee at jamboree than I have the rest of the year combined) I would in a pinch. However someone who drinks a lot of coffee wouldn't like the bitterness. IMO

Here is a site that list some other old recipes for other extenders:

Roasted dandelion root can be used instead of coffee. It takes a lot of root, however and the taste is okay but still not coffee. I've posted in another thread on dandelion root.

I kind of like the idea of using these substitutes as extenders and not replacements. Good idea.

as with most plants, time of year and age of plant would most likely make the difference, i have plenty of chicory in my pastures and lots of dandelion in my lawn, waiting for oct, for a couple of good frosts to kill of the plant then pick the roots and roast, now i like instant coffee, i use sugar(sm) and either a bit of bailies or powdered french vanilla creamer, that can make any coffee taste good, but i will keep this thread in mind for another month and see what i come up with, also i would use first year rosettes, but i have not located enough that i am willing to sacrifice them to see if the root makes a better coffee, maybe next year
