You bet I will. I'll take the regular flu shot as well. While there are some problems associated with any seasonal flu vaccine, the odds of having an adverse reaction are pretty low and no worse than any other medication. The flip side is you run the risk of contracting a potentially deadly form of flu. To me, it's like asking if you would take the small pox vaccine. My response is, where's the line start?

Last year swine flu killed a little over a thousand people, and the regular flu kills about 36,000 people a year (according to the NIH). It's no more deadly than the "regular flu", it just has a better press agent.

I haven't had a vaccination of any kind in years,I'm still healthy, even being around those who are coming down with the Flu. I usually get one or two colds during the "season" but no more than the folks that get the vaccinations. In my family I usually get sick last,after everyone else has "had it". So I guess my answer is No. I have never reacted any differently regardless of what the current "scare" is,Legionnaires Disease, bird flu,whatever, Never got any of them either.

Well I have been through the whole series of anthrax, had a flu shot every year, but I'm not so sure about this one. More importantly is my wife with child. The AF may force her to get it but I'm a little leery. Total different mindset when it's your helpless child....I would sure hate to make the wrong choice.

I’ve read over this post a couple of times and decided to hold out on my opinions considering my newb statues on these boards. I can’t help but come back to this subject though every time I come on here. I think most people ultimately want what’s best for themselves and their families. I also think it’s easy to look around at what everyone else is doing when faced with a tough decision like this. To some it may be a no brainer.. “I don’t want to get sick so I’ll take the vaccine.” Some understand there may be severe risk involved and it’s a little bit harder. Some of us though can be completely torn about what information to trust.

This is alarming to me! When so many of my amendment rights are being violated as an American citizen, I have to ask myself why? I understand the mass effects this can have on our economy as a whole, but don’t think I’m convinced enough to hand over my right to make my own decisions. This is a virus that has peered her ugly head several times over the years and I don’t understand why this time it seems to be so much more prevalent. What we do know is if you are compromised by some secondary condition, especially if it is an autoimmune disease, then you are in a much higher risk population for complicatons as a result of the disease.

I'm not trying to sway your decision one way or the other. I'm just suggesting that whatever you decide to do, do it based on solid information that's right for you and your family.

On the other side of the coin. I feel we need laws to help people do the right thing. As I am reading this thread over half of the office is at work and sick as dogs. They are all spewing germs throughout and all over each other. Me I am safe I have the only private office in the back of the plant! I did have to skip the coffee at the morning watering hole. Took one look and a little green thing on the pot handle winked at me. I headed out to the plant. Now I am thinking it may possibly be the purest form of brown nosing to come to work with such an obvious need to stay home! I also asked that the GOJO used for washing hands throughout the plant be changed to antibacterial soap and to no avail. So is it government is overstepping it's bounds or is it that they have to protect some of us who care from the rest of the public that obviously doesn't?

I can't argue with your post at all, IEC. It can be a daunting challenge to determine what is right and wrong. I wasn't comparing swine flu with smallpox. Only the requirement to vaccinate as it relates to the referenced law. If my post came across as a comparison to the diseases then I apologize.

Personally, I monitor both the CDC and WHO and look to them for guidance. I know a lot of folks don't trust them for one reason or another and that's fine. I happen to think they have a world view of any given crises so I tend to listen to them. I also pay close attention to my PCP. I have a good working relationship with him, I trust him, and I think he has my best interests at heart. You'll have to find a source(s) that you trust and base you decision on what they are saying.

By the way, I'll use a long stick....just in case.

CS - I think a lot of reasons drive people to work when they are sick. Loss of income, ongoing attendance issues, loss of "vacation" time. I always made it clear to my employees that I did not want them there if they were sick. Their recovery time is much quicker if they stay home and take care of themselves rather than show up for work. As a manager, I had to be concerned not only with their well being but also productivity as a whole.

The fact is they were probably contagious 7-10 days prior unless they are currently running a fever.

My decision is based purely on the “the best information available to me.” Personally I like to not only take into consideration information presented here in the U.S, but see what’s being presented in other countries. The U.K is usually dealing with similar issues, but seem to allow scientist a little more freedom when it comes to what they are and aren’t allowed to say. I think the last article I read from the U.K stated that this “outbreak” wasn’t near as severe as first thought.

The U.C.S (Union of Concerned Scientist) are fighting to be able to report their “full” findings in most situations as well as their professional opinions. It depends on what agencies they work for but it’s censored.. From the article:

One more thing you brought up in your post that fascinated me was the mention of autoimmune diseases and how much more compromised those individuals might be. I agree.. WE are. That makes it even more important that we get our hands on as much valid information as possible. IMO this is wrong too. They have recently changed the way vaccinations are produced. Instead of mercury we now have aluminum in them. Is that much better? Vaccinations are said to cause Nero muscular problems and Autism to name one, wasn't nearly as prevalent until mandatory vaccinations started. Most of the diseases they vaccinate against aren't even a threat anymore. Never the less all of my children are vaccinated. After speaking with a couple of health care providers, I learned that spacing them at least 6 months apart can help reduce the probability of contracting some of these terrible "side effects."

Seriously? I've never heard of that. I raised three and have 4 grandkids and that's a new one on me. There is a huge difference between missing school because they are sick and just missing school.

Look through some of the independent lab studies that have been conducted on natural remedies and vitamins and you will find that what is stated on the label is either not what is in the bottle or there are dosages well outside the stated amount.

I find it curious that folks don't trust pharmaceutical companies because those companies are just out for the money. Yet, they trust completely large herbal and vitamin corporations who have no oversight and who operate on the same free market principles that pharmaceutical companies do. In fact, aren't they pharmaceutical companies in their own right? (shrug)

I didn't mean by you, but thanks for the clarification anyway. I meant by those that think I'm not responsible enough to make wise decisions concerning my health. I think this plays a lot in what 2dumb2kwit stated about personal responsibility. It's a shame we have allowed ourselves to become so lazy we let other people make our decisions for us. I have four children. Three in school. If I provide a Dr.'s note then anything after 7 days will be excused. Anything leading up to that 7 days is tallied Dr.'s note or not. If it's not obvious by now I prefer to take more of a holistic approach when it comes to treating illness and quite successfully I might add. Unfortunately unless I rush them into the doc for some antibiotics it counts against them. However I do understand the problem with irresponsible parents who just plain won't make their children attend school...or even care for that matter.

good points! Again it's about what rights this takes away from me. I don't have the right to pick penicillin and use it or the knowledge to do so. Why? Because they decided that only they can decide how to use it. Only to protect us incompetent bastards of course. So now we don't need to knowledge and we can just depend on people who are going to take advantage of our dependence on them. It's not so much supplements and remedies that I worry about considering I don't take them, but about the plants and food themselves. Almonds, cherries just to name a couple. How long until I can't grow my own sage to help my immune system or pick cat mint from the woods to wipe out a fever. That's way more effective than Tylenol BTW.

Not only are my rights being demolished, but they are taking these wonderful natural gifts and "fixen" them to their liking. For me the line has already been crossed. I'm an intuitive person and I know that I can get the answers I need from nature and that she will take care of me. I don't want that taken away from me. The use of mold to fight bacterial growth was actually used long before the discovery of penicillin. I think in penicillins case it was about 20 yrs. before it became mass produced and controlled after a long going purification and condensing process.

While serving in the Marine Corps I was deployed around the world on a regular basis. We were inoculated for everything under the sun and pumped full of antibiotics every time we went into a new country. I was young, 18-29, but I stayed healthy.

I've taken the flu shot for many years now, I've only had a bad case of the flu twice.

But lately I've had a run of bad health. A few weeks ago I thought I was going to die.

Making a flu shot is like making a vaccination against the cold. Studies show they work fine in the lab and have little impact in the real world. The last time we had a similar national immunization program like this was during the Ford administration. The vaccinations killed enough people that they stopped the program. Thousands more were seriously injured. There are new untested ingredients besides just the ordinary mercury in this vaccine. There is no legal liability for the companies who are producing the vaccines. I prefer proof of a success rate and tested products. So, I'll pass on this one.

October the Base will be forcing all members to get it, but my wife is still undecided whether it is safe for our baby. That's a difficult one Doug. Personally and this is only my opinion, I would put aside everything you've read and go see a good healthcare professional. The trouble with the internet and the media is you really can't be certain of their sources of information. The internet can be full of info purporting to come from professionals, but can you verify it? and the media are in it to sell papers, make you prick up your ears and stay tuned. How many times have you heard or read "a healthcare professional said..." get it straight from someone whose credentials can be verified and start there, get more than one opinion if necessary. Then you can make a properly informed decision either way. As I said, just my opinion. hope this helps.

I've actually changed my mind on the H1N1 vaccine. I'm going to pass on it. Not because of any concerns but because the CDC is recommending not getting it if you are NOT in a high risk group.

I have also changed my mind on the Swine Flu shot( note I did not say H1N1 , that is a public relations ploy even though it is the medical term.). There is way too much vacilating in medical opinion on its use. I had a discussion with my family Doctor. He is a "straight shooter". His advice for a reasonably healthy adult is not to take it. And he said his family members that fit the category will not be taking the shot. Thats enough for me. The problem of having a pregnant wife, I just don't know what to say.

Well thanks for the advice and opinions on it. I hate to say but I don't put too much faith in Military Doctors. I'm still a firm believer that you get what you pay for and they are free. Not to mention all the issues I and others I know have had in the past. We are going to get a few opinions off base before we make a decision. BEIJING: The Chinese government this week announced it would launch the world’s first mass vaccination programme for the flu in October amid fears that China could soon face a mass outbreak of the A(H1N1) flu.

But experts fear the inoculation programme, which will only reach about 5 per cent of the 1.3 billion population, might be far from sufficient in light of the scale of the outbreak many expect here.

More than 100 new A(H1N1) cases were reported last weekend, mainly among returning school students. China has so far reported 5,592 cases, and health officials said on Tuesday they expect the number of cases “to soon double to 10,000.” There have so far been no reported deaths in China, but 12 people have died in Hong Kong.

The government this week ordered the release of a home-grown A(H1N1) vaccine, the world’s first, which was approved on September 4.

Its producer, Sinovac, said the vaccine would be effective after only one dose. Health Minister Chen Zhu said inoculations would begin in October and would target 65 million people by the end of the year, or 5 per cent of the population.

“Realistically, the supply, five per cent or otherwise, will not be able to match the demand in initial months,” Vivien Tan of the World Health Organisation told the China Daily newspaper. “There is a need to identity priority groups for vaccination.”

Mr. Chen said the inoculation would begin with schoolchildren, people with chronic respiratory diseases and pregnants. Officials say the highest-risk group is schoolchildren, with millions returning to schools in coming weeks. Almost all the 100 new cases were reported from schools and more than 20 schools in several provinces have been closed this week.

With the onset of the winter season in October, coupled with the annual migration of millions of farmers back to their home towns for harvests, health authorities fear the flu, which has so far been largely restricted to larger cities, may now also spread to rural areas. The Xinjiang region, in China’s far west, reported its first A(H1N1) case this week, a middle-school student.

While serving on active duty in the Navy I had no choice, but to take the swine flu vaccine in 1976. The medical team came into our barracks, we lined up, got hit with an injection in each arm at the same time (pneumatic injectors) - everyone in our barracks, to a man (80 people) spent the next 3 days in bed, unable to get up. Gee that was fun.

Doug I read all the posts and I think if I trusted an OB/GYN to deliver my child I would use
his recommendations, still not sure, go off base and just ask a Doc for an opinion. Personally I am not going to take one, yet I will take the regular flu & pneumonia shot. I was required to take that one for years and just maybe that one helped. I talked with my Doc about it last week.

Well after talking to the OB/GYN and several Doc's off Base she is going to take the shot. Not like she had a choice any way but we both feel more comfortable with it. Only thing we were concerned about was if there would be any ill affects to the baby or my wife and it sounds like they are very minimal. So aside from the possible Political/Conspiracy BS that may or may not be involved, which frankly I could care less, it seems to be the way to go.

I wouldn't go off the advice of any Military Doctor, id definitely do what some of these guys already suggested though, seek the advice of a really good off post civilian doctor.
And if you don't already have one in mind, Id ask around and do some research before you choose one. Personally I will never take it. That's just me though.

I don't take any flu shots/ vaccines ever. i got vaccinated as a kid against all the typical things and once again for Hepatitis/ Tetanis when I worked in the uniform bidness. That's it!
