so if you came across a book on edibles from 1930 would you rather have that or a brand new 2008 book? which would you feel more comfortable learning from and why?

Is your wife coming up with these questions?

New book. While the old books are really great. Usually, lots of information that has been "lost" over time, we're talking about something you eat so I want the latest and greatest information available. An example would be Pokeweed. Modern books generally contain precautions about the potential toxicity of the plant.

I would go with the most current book, as every year Alaska gets NEW plants introduced into the wild, these non-native plants come from all over the world.

Both, the reason being is i have found ways to prepare some plants in the older books that removes the toxicity out of the plant where as the new books only say that the plant is toxic. Just a note, most of these methods were used by the native americans.

Can't vote there is no option for "Both" . like Sarky said there is info in older books that is not contained in todays newer "modern" books.

I agree with Sarky and Poco, however the toxicity information is more complete in the newer books. I still voted a newer book because we do not have any older books about this subject.
