The dock (or curly dock) plant will cure the burn of stinging nettle

atta girl, good job
now has anyone tried this?
the one thing i have noticed about jewelweed is that it loses its water value as the summer goes by, so its a drier stalk makes it not as effective as earleir in the year, i still need to experiment with dock.

I have not tried the dock for stinging nettle, but then I stay away from the nettle ,and been a couple of years since I have been in contact with one,but I have FINALLY gotten my 18 year old to identify jewelweed with and without the flower, and he has had only one mild break out of poison ivy this year, that lasted only 2 days,as compared to the normal 14+ days he normally has it,because getting him to use the jewelweed was like pulling teeth.
Now when he goes out to the woods,he grabs the jewelweed, and no more reactions, there may be hope for that boy yet....

Believe it or not, some good ol' mud will soothe the pain from stinging nettles.

When I was a kid I had a knack for finding patches of stinging nettles, not with my eyes, but with my bare legs. My dad would tell me to rub mud on my legs, and it actually helped. Since these nettles often grow near water, there is usually mud near by.

I know it doesn't sound sanitary, but it used to work for me.

if you lived in an area like me you'd not worry. once you get into the year, there's nothing left of the curly dock plant but the fire spindle, and the nettles are nowhere to be seen.

I took a pic of a patch of jewelweed. Here it is. http://s101.photobucket.com/albums/m50/shroomer69/Nature/?action=view&current=jewelweedpatch.jpg

there's a close up in there somewhere too.

I didn't know about dock, but heard that plantain works well for skeeter bites and such.?? I'm curious if it's possible to extract the juice from jewelweed, etc. and preserve it in a spray bottle or the like.??

You can boil water and steep the jewelweed in that for a while and then use the "tea" on the affected area.

I don't know anything about the plant other than what I have read on the net. However this site http://www.vitalitymagazine.com/node/216 claims "An oddity of nature is that the best antidote for nettle sting is juice of its own leaves."

i tried plantain this year after hearing about this also, seems to work decent enough, didn't seem immediate but was soothing enough, extracting enough juice would be diffucult on its own but i have heard of boiling it up the freezing into cubes and using that way (have not done this meself just read it)

I know one wouldn't usually carry this around, but vinegar would ease the sting. And I've been told that urine is supposed to work, too. But I suppose that wouldn't be terribly polite, now would it? :tongue_smilie:
