I have a firearm that I don't use, and yet the case could be made that for western states it could be a very versatile survival tool. Few handguns can drop a moose or a man at 400 yards and harvest small game at 10 feet. It shoots the awesome .454 Casull and it also shoots the .45 Long Colt cartridge which is available in reduced Cowboy loads and Shot-shell loads.

It is the Freedom Arms revolver with a 10" barrel and sports a Leupold 2.5 to 8 power EER handgun scope. The package cost more than I paid for a brand new 1967 Corvette Convertible. Still it is odd that no one talks about long range powerful handguns for western states survival.

WOW!!! And could be used as an anit armor weapon. It would seem that if a fella was manly enough to stand and fire it, he should be able to dissuade most anything on the continent. Just curious, is a follow up shot possible?

Yes, It is a common cartridge in Alaska for Bear Protection, generally most will use much shorter barrel length. Ruger and Taurus make double action wheel guns in .454 Casull.

Found this link for others (like me) who haven't heard of it and are curious about it.

Seems like a heck of a weapon.

Thanks but I don't need a handgun that can recoil into my forehead or, perhaps, a bit beyond.

Why? Is there anything behind your forehead? Just asking.......... :innocent:

Certainly debatable but whatever is there I've learned to love and would just as soon keep it!

Freedom Arms revolver with a 10" barrel , they had one at our local Gander Mountain, came with wheels to drag it around.

I think if I was going to go for a handgun with that kind of down-range power, my choice would be something like this one...

http://www.gunblast.com/SW460XVR.htm

Fires a 360 gr. bullet 400 fps faster than the 454 Casull.

It also shoots all 454 Casull and 45 Long Colt offerings.

I think that at least one reason very few people ever suggest such guns as "out West" survival tools is that they are really purpose-driven hunting guns. They are so big and so heavy that, especially for a survival weapon, you really might as well have a rifle. Full-performance ammo is also relatively difficult to acquire (at least as compared to other handgun and rifle calibers) and is very, very costly.

I have a question to add to this. Is Casull still in business? I really wanted a .38 Casull pistol. I already have dies to reload.

I won't swear to it, but I think Freedom Arms took over in 2005.

Edit: Check that - not sure who bought em, but couldn't find anything past 2005 for them.

I was previously "seduced" by the whole hand cannon fad a few years ago and bought a .454 Cassull. IMHO...anything greater than a .44 Mag is just plain..(ok I'll say it)...stupid. Good luck trying to get a second shot on target with that massive kick. I suggest a rifle if you need to exceed .44 Mag. Quite often I recommend to friends to limit revolver calibers to .357 or less. I've mentioned it before on this site, but it is worth mentioning again. One shot (while deer hunting) from my .454 casull left me with permanant hearing damage in my left ear, and constant/serious ringing. I hope you never have to experience serious tennitus. My $.02 cents.
