Well I am just a cowboy so I don't think I am credible on this one but in my experience HP is a good platform.

I don't know much about 'puters, so I'd say...just be sure that the little sammich tray/pringle can holder thingy works.:innocent:

Crash, my next one will be an Apple. No question about it. My son gave me a lesson on his a couple of weeks back. It'll take a bit of getting used to, but it's really user friendly.

He's had it for 2 years now, and not a single virus or crash, Crash!

BTW - it WILL run windows. Kinda' defeats the purpose, but it'll do it.

Simple and cheap, an ACER netbook. Around $300. By using your current screen and mouse and keyboard,it acts like a desk top. Since they are so small, are a bit of a pain to use their keyboard. But for simple word processing and web surfing is handy. You can get themwith Windows XP or Vista. I have replaced my work and homecomputers with them. And they are almost instant on. Also they are small and easy to move or lock in the desk drawer or throw in a back pack. Here is a site to give you an idea, I got mine on Amazon for about $30 than ACER charges.

I have a Compac Presario laptop,and I love it,goes where I go.

When the house burned last year,I lost my desk top,because I couldn't just grab it and go.THAT'S not gonna happen again!

HP and Compaq are the same company.

I have had Dell's and many of them. They are reliable.

But before any recommendations you need to say what you use it for primarily.

Or just buy a mac and be done with it.

Hey, a question on WS I can actually answer intelligently - WOW!

1) Brands: All PCs are commodities, doesn't matter if the outside says: HP, Dell, Compaq (now a division of HP), Acer, Lenovo (used to be IBM) or anything else, the inside parts are all made in the same factories in Asia, by a handful of major speciality manufacturers. So only pay extra for a brand name if that makes you feel better of if the warranty is a big deal. (Never buy the extended warranty, unles you need to, to sleep at night. If it's gonna break it will do so within 30-90 days, else it's okay.)

2) OS (Operating System) Microsoft is about to launch it's latest OS called Windows 7. Trade reports say it will be consideribly better then Vista (which isn't very good) and better then the older XP (which is pretty good.) I have been waiting for 7 for months and around Xmas, when the deals are flying everywhere, will upgrade my desktop and possibly my family's systems.

One caveat: upgrading from Vista is suppossed to be relatively painless, but from XP is suppossed to be a quite a challenge.

Finally: There is Mossberg. Walt Mossberg is the Tech columnist for the Wall Street Journal and is widely considered to be one of the, if not THE most trusted man for the layman on Tech matters. He's practically a god and can make or break whole companies. He and his assistant write two columns/wk that are so widely read, the Jounal posts them for free (where other content must be purchased by annual subscription.) Every Fall he publishes an annual computer buyers guide column which tells you what you should buy and why. (I mean in terms of memory, speed, processors, etc, all of the stuff most people are clueless about.) Here's his WSJ website, all very searchable:

As I said - gotta be a PC. That comes from she who must be obeyed. Uses - records keeping/storage. Data processing. Maintaining customer databases. Scheduling. Digital photography editing and storage. Web access.

I just bought an FPC with a Celeron. It was only about $425 complete. It has Kingston memory, an MSI mainboard and a Seagate hard drive.
Made in China but seems to be a good rig.
I wiped it clean of Winbloze Pissta and loaded Ubuntu Linux. Working very well.

My other rig is a Macbook Pro with a second monitor and wireless keyboard and mouse setup.
Too much money and not all that great.

I'm running a Dell XPS desktop and the same in a laptop. Windows XP on the desktop and Vista on the laptop.

I know there are problems with Vista. I'm running XP Pro now (older version). All of the computers being sold now that have Vista (at least the ones I've checked) offer a free upgrade to Windows 7 when available. For my useage though, Vista may not be a problem. I've got a few more sources to check, but it seems that Best Buy (brick and mortar) had some pretty good deals, and they do price match if I can find it cheaper.

The differences are quite small and speed related. Unless you are a professional gamer, are using extensive CAD/CAM or editing movies w/ your PC, or, of course, work for Industrial Light and Magic, it doesn't matter.. you won't know the difference.

HP is here in Idaho and that's what I prefer, but my hubby uses Dells at work. I think cuz they are cheaper. I have had lots of experience with Mac's (in the school system) and they are good, but EXPENSIVE. So what are your perameters? Are you looking at price? What do you want it to do?

If you are going to go through all of the trouble of upgrading your OS, it's probably best to upgrade to the newest version (7), simply because it will allow you to put-off the next upgrade further. Also, if there's no rush, the closer to Xmas, the better the deals, especially on everything that is 1/2 step below the top-of-the-line. Just my two-cents.

I don't have any problems with Vista. Office 2007 is a real pain because they moved where everything lives. You don't just click on File > Save anymore. Why they did it is beyond me. Quite a learning curve for the different apps.

Thanks for the replies everybody. TusconMax - I don't think the one I'm typing on now will make it till Christmas. MM - Mostly Microsoft Office Applications. I plan on doing more photo editing, maybe eventually some movies - but nothing serious. The prices I was looking at for the threee systems (Dell, HP, Gateway) were in the $425 to $500 range for computer only. I'll probably need the newer version of Office - I think I'm using 2000 or 2002 - need to check on compatability issues with Vista.

I'll second this. You won't notice the difference if you are doing what you said you are doing. I would recommend buying the fastest AMD you can afford. And, unless you use programs that are designed to use 4 processors, buy the faster duo. Also, the CPU isn't the only bottleneck when it comes to speed. Harddrive speed, amount and speed of RAM, and video card capabilities can really make a big difference.

Personally, I have become disenfranchised when it comes to buying ready made computers. My brother in law (an IT guy) showed me Newegg, and now, all I want to do is build my own.

Not exactly a computer recommendation for Crash but certainly for any off-gridders: we got a netbook by Asus, the EPC 1000HE, which uses only very little power and runs about 6-7 hours on its battery when internetting and over 8 hour just writing. Recharges in 4 hours. Keyboard is a bit dinky but the low power consumption sure makes a difference when you're running off solar or whatever.

Don't know if you have one or not but we have a school for the handicapped and they build computers for each student. I got this one with everything you can imagine. I like XP Pro, personal preference. No junk programs and the lady put in programs that cost more than this ole boy could afford. With 17" flat screen & floppy disc(not on most now) plus more goodies than I will ever use for $100. & my old one. I added a donation of $100. and got exactly what I wanted with programs I use only. I would check and see, sure won't hurt. Grand total $200 and 1/2 of that a great donation I would have made anyway.

brands don't make the darndest difference for the most part, as long as it's not an incredibly flimsy case, the innards [mem/proccessor/peripherals] are what cound.

if it's got what you need, find a deal. you don't have to over pay at a place like best buy when you could pay less that 2/3 as much online even after shipping.

as for operating system, use what you know, unless you want to spend a year or more getting comfortable. i'm a linux guy, but i wouldn't recommend it to somebody who isn't at least a bit adventurous or hasn't used a posix type environment before.

Locks up a lot. Not always while on line either. I suspect some sort of virus/malware. Search engines are re-directed. MS Word won't always come up. I've run several anti this and that programs. I had the Geeks On Call guy look at it - his final conclusion - It's really old, and I'm not a miracle worker.

crash i have a compaq presario notebook with the 17" screen it's running vista. They had a lot of problems at first with vista after mine crashed ( no pun intended) the computer shop put in the new version of vista and It works great current price for a computer like mine is around $600. at wal mart. plus with the laptop you can take it with you and wireless internet is only around $ 25.00 a month here through AT&T.

No need to upgrade applications (Office, etc) just because you upgrade OS. Older versions of Ofiice will work fine. I've been using Excell 97, that's 12 years old, on XP w/o any problems. I know it, like it, don't need a newer version, and spreadsheets sent to me open fine (it's backward compatable) so why pay MSFT more money if you don't need to?

Too late. Picked up a copy of Office 2007. It is a bit different than the version I was using, but I do like the changes that have been made to it.
