o almost 6 years ago before i met my wife or had a computer or even put a name to emergency preparedness, i was living in the stinky city of hamilton and this was after the big blackout of 03 where that nite i had taken notes on what i needed and did or did not have and how the city reacted, kind of neat to look over those notes years later. so i had bought a bunch of beans as i had just left AZ a few years earlier and was used to the bean culture, now fast forward 6 years and i still have those same beans on my shevles, and now that i am laid off i have gone into cost saving mode(and the wife won't let buy and more ) even if they are on sale, so today i have some black(turtle) beans soaking which i love to mix with rice, they all look good still in the same plactic package i bought them in and store on shelves in a basement all these years. i;;ll let ya know if they lost any taste or not

really< just plant then and a bean plant grows? hmm wonder why i never thought of that, do you need to sprout them first or just take a bean and put it in the soil, does it matter if its a black bean or kidney or split or what ever?

Could you grow them inside? With the short growing season, may be the way to go....house plant.

I found out by accident last year while cleaning out the burned house, and tossed some bags out through a window in the general direction of the wheelbarrow (and missed, busting the bags) and the beans that spilled onto the ground sprouted and I let them grow, just to see what they would do,there were navy, black and pintos growing very well, and yep I harvested them,LOL.

Haven't tried growing them inside.

Well, that depends. If you want to grow butter beans, then yes...it matters if you plant kidney beans. LOL:innocent:

I just stick the beans in the ground, add a little water and stand back. I usually put three beans together. I almost always get at least one to grow. But that's all you have to do.

I stick the beans in the high hole, and they come out the low hole, and into Outhouse hole, and the only thing that grows is the smell.........:)

You should see what happens when you plant elbow macaroni!

Seriously though, dried beans (And rice) keep a very long time. They should be fine.

when i lived in town i did alot of work at the DQ (that and was a good customer) so i had the owner save me some of the food grade buckets for me, they would just throw them out anyways, so now i have got in the storage space under my stairs rice still in the plastic it came in ,in those buckets some for as long as two years now, which pales in comparison to the 6 years i've had thhe beans just sitting onthe shelf, but alot better than the canned stuff i would say

My solution to storing a lot of food without having to eat canned food all the time, is expensive, but rewarding if you can afford it. I set up a rotating queue of non-perishables, and then give them to the foodbank.

Every couple of months, you rotate in a new supply, and give the original away. Its a nice way to donate, while increasing the freshness and size of your food supply, you might otherwise not be able to support.

But of course, you have to be able to afford to make that continuous donation to the food bank every couple of months.
