Last night while I was at work a transformer gave up the ghost. My wife called ands said the explosion was impressive and the bang was so loud she thought my BIL's house had exploded. The transformer is on the pole just in front of his house. All the kids freaked out with the comotion.
Crystal knows where all our emergency prep is and picked out a few of the kids lanterns and a few other compfort items.Once they were settled down all our neighbors camped out on our front lawn. She said not one of them had a flashlight. And they liked the little LED lanterns for the kids.
When I got home power was back on and crystal and I sat on the deck with a coffee thinking of what we had and what we could have used.I know it was not a big deal to loose power for a few houres but it looks like we were the only ones who were ready.
*I coulda' made a few bucks selling batteries* Call me next time, Joe.
It may not be a good idea to let the neighbors know that your prepared.

And before you say another word Ken, It wasn't me! honest!
Having been there myself a couple of times recently, boy does it make a difference knowing you can cope.
And before you say another word Ken, It wasn't me! honest!
That investigation started yesterday. :sneaky2:

It may not be a good idea to let the neighbors know that your prepared.Unless you & your neighbors are on good terms you might not want to let them know what your preparations are. Many folks who failed to prepare might just want to "drop over" to your place & expect you to help them as well! Here's an idea! Why not start a "Neighborhood
Emergency Preparedness Group?" Stargazer could bring it up since those that live near him should now be aware that it can & does happen. This gives me an idea for a new thread! :cool2:

As of right now all my neighbors know that we have is a few lanterns and my genny. We( my wife and I along with on set of neighbors) had a similar discussion about being ready for hurricanes. This is when I was getting the genny running.I got the why are you wasting youre time with getting it running question.I was then told that we never get that kind of weather any more and if we did there would be plenty of time to hit the stores. My wife looked at me then back at my neighbor and said that he was right.
After Katrina I still can not understand why some people think "it will never happen to us".

Good Opportunity! I consider little inconveniences like the transformer exploding to be a chance to use your prep skills... so you're fortunate! Sounds like they got it fixed quickly because it was an isolated incident, but you can let the family know that if there were 200 transformers that went out all at once, it is good that you guys have a plan and preps. This let you check out the generator and the transfer switch, get to check out the flashlights and the accessability of the lights when the lights go out, you get to check the 'Communications System" and the emergency plan, you get to make plans for getting water and food and keeping warm/ cool without power... all in a real (although short-term) situation. Like a "training exercise"!
