View Full Version : "CASH"....as a SURVIVAL Supply.....??? Banks Closed.

Please, NOT wanting to know your CASH on hand....However yesterday FDIC closed FOUR Banks, one of which was the largest Bank closure this year (So FAR). So having some amount of CASH on hand might be as prudent as having a water filter, or BOB.

I agree 100% Cash is King. ALWAYS keep enough cash on hand.

For those who believe in gold, that's okay, too, as it will always hold it's value compared to currencies, but it's just too difficult to engage in regular trade with.

there is the danger of devaluating through order by feds,
rendering cash at home useless.
maybe not if small gold and silver coins.
but who knows really, right?

Here's my question. Wouldn't it be more prudent to stockpile items like, coffee, alchol, tp, and things like that to barter with as oppose to stockpiling cash? In MHO I feel there is going to come a time when money is going to be worthless and we'll all go back to the good old barter system. Any thoughts or opinions.

I think that it depends on exactly what you are preparing for.

Examples

- a regional disaster (economic, weather-related, etc.) where the banks are closed and you need to temporarily relocate or can still make some purchases - it's cash!

- a global currency crisis - think gold.

- if TSHTF - well, I'd rather have all of the things I could on hand to ride things out for as long as possible, but a few barter items (no, not firearms or ammo) might come in real handy!

I agree, with the uncertainties, I have started the "under the mattress" fund awhile back. Have bumped it up a bit more since the current policies seem to be at best a wash.

Only problem I see with stockpiling cash is, what if it is a natural disaster and your home is destroyed. Money is gone. Or if your house gets robbed. Money is gone. Of course I have always wanted a secret bunker under my house to stockpile all this type of stuff along with firearms, food, water, etc. And it would make a great storm or bomb shelter. Ya never know when that may come in handy.

Lot's of ways to hide some cash and keep it safe, Doug.

One is to vaccuum seal some cash and put it in a short length of PVC pipe with capped ends. Just bury it about a foot deep some place in the yard - just remember where!

Well maybe it's because I'm still young 'and dumb" but I can't save money to save my life. Could be that I'm very impatient and want everything right now. I don't want to spend my whole life aquiring things I want them all NOW!! Yeah I know it can't happen, well unless I find all the cash you have buried in your yard Ken.... so where in Mass. are you located exactly. :) I hear lawyers are wealthy.

Well I'm going for a belt and braces approach. I have the bank of mattress and I'm now starting to increase storable goods. One thing I have noticed over here is all of a sudden canning jars are very popular, so it might be worth investing in them!

DIVERSITY : That's what my broker preaches and I agree. You need a little of everything and you can't make anything on short term (up to a year) CDs. The rating system your broker uses gives you a least likely or probably will fail look at banks, not perfect by far. As for the FDIC you folks do know that as written they can take up to 20 years to give you your $$$ back. I DO invest, maintain a decent inventory of "stuff" and use two banks plus cash at home well defended by an attack beagle and a nice Beretta(if I can ever find it).

I stopped years ago listening to brokers. I just got the impression that they were just puking up what they read in their trade journals. Luckily I did it in time to avoid much of the current problems. For me I went almost all government stuff. If I followed the old brokers advice, (like several of my friends), I would have to work well past age 60 ( like they will). As it is, I have been able to retire twice before age 50 and now work just to occupy time and for beer money.

Please do. I have about 2 acres that need clearing, and even if you do find the cash (not that much THERE) it'll be worth it!

As it is, I have been able to retire twice before age 50 and now work just to occupy time and for beer money.

Beats me. I have used the "Dave Ramsey" method for 40 years and I retired at 51 so I guess I am a late bloomer. You can learn, even from a bad broker. I'm just an old hillbilly hanging on, one day to the next.:innocent:

If the banks close my cash is good for it but yours wont be worth the paper its printed on :innocent:

i think i try to do it the same way i have heard you do it hope, i just try to have already bought anything i deem valuable, for the litlle bit i do have in the bank if they close then i am covered by insurance and if not then i don't have to pay my bill any more cuz everything i owe would be at that bank, if they are closed then whom do i owe my money to?
on the other hand i did live in a small town of barry's bay ont, for a few months thru the winter, every one had wood stove back up cuz when the wind blew the power went out, the transmission lines went right thru algonquin park and some remote area.so yes i kept a few dollars on hand so i could still purchase gas or food as most places there also ahd a genny back up

In the long run, it probably whatever you can sleep with at night (Hope, we are talking investment philosophies :) ). Like anything else in life there is no perfect answer

That we are. It's a crap shoot now and we are talking investment philosophies for sure. That's the exactly what my broker told me a few years ago and if I need to check it every day or even think it's not safe I get out fast. I probably didn't explain myself well but diversity to me follows everything from investing to personal preparations, stockpiles etc. I really wanted to say that in a bank failure the FDIC has up to 20 yrs. to pay. Lots of folks don't know that. I wish one of us had a surefire investment route, I would gladly share. I built a house in the VA suburbs of DC in the late '60s and felt great to get a 7% fixed loan, I remember in the late '70s it was 14% average, now nothing. Seems everything is going down the toilet.
