I am making a spoon out of green tulip poplar, and i have the outside carved to shape and will sand that soon. And i have gouged out the actuall "spoon" part but it looks rough. How can i smooth out the concave part. I have tried sand paper but it just isn't working. i dont have any other tools that might work besides a bench knife and a small gouge but that isn't smothing it. Is there any thing else i can try.

If you have the rough shape in a half round file may help along with some 40 grit sand paper. Once you get it leveled out with the 40 grit switch to 120, then 320, then 400 then 600 and go as hig as you want. Hope this helps.
If you have a Dremmel you can use it. I rough shaped my spoons with my drill press using a sandpaper drum. For the bowl I used a small knife then smoothed it up with a Dremmel tool using the sandpaper drum tool as well as the stone tool. Once I had the depth I wanted in the bowl and had it down to 120 grit with the Dremmel, I finished the rest by hand. I went to 200 grit to finish it.

I have never made one, but I was thinking that if your making this as a survival scenario then you might try some playground sand or equivalent and using a tree limb about the size of the mouth of your spoon maybe you could abrade the mouth of the spoon by rubbing the stick in a waxing motion to smooth it?

Maybe use a lighter or fire source to burn the area to be sanded for removal?
I have never done it but sounds like it needs to be dried out some.
