I just found out that one of my co-workers has Lyme disease. This is a shock considering there are no known cases in Alaska. More specifically there are no known cases where Lyme disease has originated here. There are many cases where it has been a transplant situation. They are not positive how or where it originated but have several leads. One being, she adopted a dog that had lived in Texas recently so they suspect maybe the dog carried a tick up here and infected her. I had always heard of this disease but never paid it much attention before. Just thought I would share and remind others to be cautious when out in the "bush" lots of hazards out there.

My brother contracted Limes Diseease when he was about 18. It wasn't pretty. I was called to the home he was living in of one of his friends. We were not very close during this time in our lives. Still loved him we just disagreed on alot of things. I went to see what was wrong, I arrived to find my brother bed ridden and asleep. I laid my hand on his shoulder to shake him to wake him up. He blurted out in excruciating pain. At 19 I was at a loss as to what could be wrong. I called my parents who were now retired on the otherside of the US and told my Mother she needed to come and get him right away. Mom and Dad came and my little brother was diagnosed with Limes Disease. He will not talk about it so I no little more than that the condition is something he still deals with today.
