Howdy! Thought I'd stop in and say hello.. I've been into wilderness skills for as long as I can remember, and I'm please to have stumbled here to be amongst like-minded people.

I've only recently discovered the ultralight backpacking trend and I'm enjoying that, so I'm interested to see who else here enjoys that as well.

Ciao!

Welcome to the forums. I'm into minimalist/ultralight packing as well so if you need any tips or tricks to lighten your load, don't hesitate to ask.

Cool! Care to swap pack loadouts? I'm currently sitting at 11 pounds, minus the dehydrated food I'll buy before I need it, and water.

I'll show you mine if you show me yours! ;)

Currently I'm sitting with:

Osprey Aether 75 pack (too heavy for anything less than a week long excursion)

(mess kit)
.9L Snowpeak Trek900 titanium pot with skillet lid
pepsi-can pressurized ethynol stove (with some personal modifications)
titanium spork
fuel bottle (in 12oz plastic pepsi bottle) with 15' duct tape wrapped around (utility)
spices (in film canisters; salt, pepper, seasoned salt/blackening spice mix)
veggy oil
butane lighter

(nav bag)
topo map
small pencil
small notebook

(emergency/utility Altoids tin)
Flint striker
pencil-shaped honing stone
20' fishing line
cork 'coin' with 4x Eagle Claw hooks
razor blade
bandages
moleskin
aspirin
iodine tablets
spare boot lace
12' string
wound cotton and waterproof matches (in a small ziplock)
floating candle
multitool with pliers, flat head screwdriver, can opener, etc.

(loose)
Tarptent Contrail /w sewn-in floor
Tyvek ground cloth (cut to fit Contrail)
3L Camelbak reservoir
Down sleeping bag (can't remember brand, came from the 80s.. looks like marmot?)

My food generally consists of freezer bag cooking (http://www.freezerbagcooking.com/) which works wonders for even weeklong thru hikes. Aside from the clothes on my back in spring-fall I only have a windproof/waterproof poncho and maybe a fleece pullover in my pack.

Last time I weighed in I was around 11 as well, though at least 4lbs came from just the pack. :)

10 pounds is pretty light, especially since my prior pack weighed 10 pounds with the pack and sleeping bag alone!

yes, the purist in me says you should be able to camp with a knife and some clothes, but we're talking about ultralight camping.. not survival testing. :)
