WOW if they were in a fire, would be suspect at least. Hopefully one of the guys that are doing forging and knife making can give you and educated guess.

I looked thru my books and also googled for heat treat on rifles, but without knowing the exact metal that its made from or how hot the fire got all I can do is guess.

I have restored many old battle rifles in poor condition and I would not take a chance on one of these. If you have ever seen a Mauser blow gas back through the action you would steer clear. I'm surprised they're selling them without a warning other than a report on their condition and history. Mac

NOT USABLE for anything above a .22 rimfire! The fire more than likely changed the temper of the steel, either making it softer or more brittle. Either way, if you touch off a high pressure round in this, bad things will happen.

Not to mention the heat may have twisted or drooped the barrel (depending on how it was laying) so it may no longer be a true bore.

after doing a lot of reading and goggling on the subject of tempering and heat , there would also be a significant risk of the bolt being brittle resulting in fast flying metal being stopped suddenly by my skull

We'd like pictures on that, too. I don't think anyone has posted on that yet.

I have seen a few Mini gun barrells forged into a knives.

It would make a one of a kind blade.

I too am surprised they would even offer something this questionable.

Maybe if you wanted to build a "wall hanger", but I'd leave the firing pin out of it!:tongue_smilie:

Well curiosity got the best of me so I called them up. and here is what they told me, that close to half of them now have new and interesting shapes and contours and there was no traces of stocks left on any of them. so that answers the question of how bad the fire was. so they would make real good fire pokers.
