View Full Version : America's Biggest Garage Sale
Just so you know, America's biggest garage sale is coming up next month. So crack open those piggy banks. It extends from West Unity, Ohio south along 127 to Gadsden, Alabama. It will happen on August 6, 7, 8 and 9 so be there or be square!

Dang... Wish I had the funds. The girl and I would be on the bike on our way. Guess we'll just have to save the enthusiasm for next year.
Well, we're back. We did the route 127 yard sale thingy. Left on Friday and just got back. The yard sale was Thursday, Friday, Saturday and today. All I can say is HOLY COW!!!! I've never seen so many yard sales. We started in Van Wert, Ohio and ended up some place south of Beaver Lick, Kentucky. We camped on Friday and Saturday nights. Lots of antique and flea market dealers but a whole lot of farmstead sales, too. I snagged a framing square for $3, a Coleman 413 D (with the pull out legs) that has been converted to propane for $10 and a near mint porcelain camping kettle for $5. I've seen the kettles go for $40-$50 on ebay.
I did an Ohio ammo check for everyone. I did check a gun dealer's shop in Ohio and he had just about any type of round you wanted. A box of 25 .9mm jhp was $40.00. Mausers were $190. I'm not certain where we were at but it was along 127 somewhere around Greenville, Ohio. I don't know if that helps anyone but it was fun looking. He had every bow you could want and several black powder guns.
Camping wasn't bad. Overnight showers on Friday night but they held off until after my stew dinner with cherry cobler desert. Nothing like hot cherry cobler with whipped cream and a hot cup of coffee while watching the rain clouds move in. MMMm good!! A little patter on the rain fly was even kind of nice to listen to.
Most of the stuff was sucked up on Thursday so we missed all that. We heard all the stories of all the great stuff they had out and everyone was just snapping it up. (You should have been here yestersay! They were catching 'em by the tub full!). I've heard those fishin' stories before. I would just nod and smile and keep on walking. Sunday was the real sales, though. Everyone wanted to get rid of stuff and didn't want to pack it back up so they were wheeling and dealin' to get you to buy anything. I picked up the Coleman stove and porcelain pot today. I'm sure the prices were higher or someone would have already snagged them long before we got there.
It was a nice two days. We had a good time and scored a couple of deals along the way. Hard to beat that.

Poco - it was all practice. He promised to make us all some this weekend.
Well, uh, I might have to do a bit of taste testing, though. Just to make certain it's palatable, you know. I wouldn't want any harm to come to anyone.

I've done this garage sale a few times, bk. Before kids.
Started in Gadsden and made it to Kentucky. Found so many great deals the first time we went.
The second time, we hit it over the mountains and started in Ft. Payne Alabama., the sale seemed alot more commercial.
Best deals that we found were not on the main road, but the off shoots. Many buyers don't want to veer off the main path, but those sales were the best.
I just drove over Lookout Mnt. last week on Thursday, and that whole strip going down to Summerville Ga. was the I something yardsale. Who would have thunk.
Of course I stopped at a few.
There were a fair share of antique dealers and flea marketers but a lot of multiple family and farm sales. We looked for those signs that said SALE 1/2 mile =======>. The dealers were usually pulling trailers so they stayed to the main road. Too bad.....for them. (chuckle).
