The other day I traveled to Tallahassee. About an hour after leaving (still dark) I hit an area of heavy, acrid smoke. On the way home that same day, here’s what I found. At first I thought that it may have been a controlled burn, but judging from the size of the area burned I believe it may have been somebody throwing a lit cigarette out the window. Either way, it's a good reminder for us all to mind our fires - be they lit cigarettes, or campfires - improperlly handled they can cause a lot of damage and potential harm to others.

Here-Here!, I bet out in Californi'e you get caught thumping a butt, the next pack of blows you get will be coming from the commissary? You have to turn out a lotta plates to get Marlboros at $0.80 an hour.

Are you sure it wasn't a controlled burn? The Paper Companies have A LOT of land down there and sometimes they burn a lot of acreage at a time. I saw one that covered about two miles or so of road frontage once in S Ga. Thought the same thing but it was a controlled burn. Just about Everything surrounding the Okefenokee Swamp is owned by Paper companies, they do one about every 4-5 years in an area. I ronically fire is Good for the Swamp yet the Gov't never lets it burn. That place is a powder Keg, and it needs it....BAD. fire is the only thing that cleans it out and it is WAY overdue! even with what they had a few years back.

Speaking of fires... http://afsmaps.blm.gov/imf/imf.jsp?site=fire .... there are 68 active wildfires in Alaska right now. Always some kind of natural disaster going on up here from volcanoes, to earthquakes, sub zero temps, to wildfires. Never a dull moment.

it could have been a controlled burn. The tree was smoldering from possibly a lightining strike .look at the new green grass the burn is a couple weeks old.

It may have been a controlled burn. I'm just not sure. As to it being a couple of weeks old - I do not believe that's the case since just eight hours earlier I drove through very heavy smoke from it. There were about a dozen or so areas that were smoldering like that tree - I thought the tree just made a cool pic.

Hey HOSSFLY how about lighting your way over to the Introduction section and tell us a bit about yourself. Thanks. http://www.wilderness-survival.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=14
