Hi gang,

Has/does anyone use jerky in recipes? I thought about boiling some to make a stew/soup. Thanks!

Eric

There are lots of threads on jerky. Here's one with my recipe:

Rick, I don't think he's asking how to make jerky, but rather if anyone has used jerky as an ingredient in something else.
(I'm kinda curious about that, myself.)

I did a quick search, but only found recipes to make jerky.(But you have to remember, that I'm not real smart.) :innocent:

(head slap) Duh! Okay. Yes, you can use jerky in just about anything. It's simply dried meat. If you make a soup or stew the liquid from the stew will rehydrate the meat. Just remember that if you marinade the meat when you make the jerky those flavors will come out in your stew or soup.

Jerky is easy peasy to make. I have a dehydrator but prefer making it in the oven. The best part, of course, is the eating!!!!! Yummmmmmmmmm.

Oh, yeah, we don't listen to what Crash says.

Rick - I tried to tell them that you made the best beef jerky - they just weren't listening.

I haven't made it myself but I had friends back in NY that made it using a dehydrator and also the oven. When I moved to OR, and got with my other half, I learned how to make it using an outdoor smoker. He does EVERYTHING (well i guess kind of?) himself. He put together a wire rack framed with scrap wood and scrap wire (chicken wire and screens I believe), sliced up pieces of deer and elk, that he killed, and layed them on the rack seasoned the strips with salt and lots of pepper (mmm), put the rack on 4 wood stumps over a smoldering fire of willow and put canvas covering the whole thing to keep the smoke in. He has to watch it constantly so it doesnt produce flames and just keeps smoking for hours and hours and then when it's done...I get to enjoy! I've never had it like this before but I sure LOVE it...I brought some back to NY with me when I went in late March and my family was a little hesistant about trying it but they loved it! I was proud! haha even though I really didnt have much of a hand in the process other than keeping company!

Tiffany - I think you cut a good deal. Personally, I'd like to read your manual on deal cutting.

Hahaha not sure how to take that...BUT I also wanted to add, this is how he smokes some of the rainbow trout he catches in our rivers and lakes here! Yumm again!

It was a compliment. You said you get to eat the jerky and all you have to do is keep him company. That's a pretty good deal. I need to learn how to cut deals like that. I can eat a lot of jerky!!!!

Haha ok...I was hoping it was a compliment! Well my "watching" is slowly coming to a halt. Sad I know...but as I am getting shown knew things, I'm expected to start participating! I used to be afraid to get "dirty", now, not so much! When I went on my first camping trip, I made a comment of how Ihad never gotten so dirty in my life! And I was OK with it! SO I am enjoying helping a little more than before! It's really neat to learn new things and about different cultures!

Getting dirty - working up a sweat - getting physically tired - all things that make you appreciate what you're accomplished. Feels like you've earned the results.

Exactly why I don't mind it anymore! Makes me feel really good!

Down here in South Texas we shred it up a bit and add it to scrabled egg and serve it up in a flour tortilla for breakfast. I add cheese to mine.
