This is more of a vent than anything. I was out in my yard earlier today working on my (new to me) camper when a family was walking by. Their son was in a 'power wheel" jeep and ran right through my front yard. Now I spend a lot of time taking care of my yard because it is fun to me. It's nice and green with lots of flowers and stuff. Did the parents scold him...NO.... they said nothing. Of course I was a smart a$$ about it. I said, "wow sure is nice that people respect other's property." I didn't even get a look.
Another example... last weekend we went camping. It was at a campground, I know I feel ashamed. :) So there we were in our camp site enjoying ourselves when a family of 4 just walks right through our site. Between us and our camp fire. They didn't say a word and didn't even look at us. About 30 minutes later several teenagers did the same thing. Still not sure why they did this but I found it very disrespectful. Am I wrong for letting this bother me? Is this a common thing these days? Am I just a very young "angry old man?" :sneaky2:

Doug, that's what happens when parents don't teach their kids manners. They grow up to be adults with no manners raising their own kids with no manners.

THAT'S why God invented barbed wire.

I hate to think that this type of mindset is common these days but I fear it is.

No Doug, you are not a "very young "angry old man?". Just a guy that wants respect. It is a shame that the kids are not taught respect. For the property of others and simply for others. The only good thing about your experiences, it reinforces your values. And just think, what goes around, comes around, these kids will be treated the same way some day.

It sounds like you need more guy lines for your tent (olive drab of course) at about ankle level.

I had a similar experience when I was camping outside yosemite a few years ago. I was sitting at my picnic table with my girlfriend and this couple comes walking by my campsite with their dog off the leash. The dog proceeds to walk over to my tent and lift its leg. I yelled at the dog and they laughed, without a simple "sorry about that". That's just obnoxious.

Thanks everyone at least I know I am not alone in this. When they did that at the campground I was speechless. I mean I wanted to say something but was at a loss. I couldn't believe what i was seeing. Crazy world these days.

We have a neighbor up the street. The road is a 30 mph zone. We usually drive about 20 mph, because the jerk lets his small kids (like 3 - 5 years old) play in the street and between parked cars (why use the driveway right?) instead of in the yard, and nobody wants to be on the receiving end of a motor vehicle homicide charge because of this fool. Besides, the kids don't know any better and they don't deserve to die just because their idiot Dad doesn't teach them any better than to play out in the road.

Nonetheless, the guy still had the b@lls to yell at everyone to slow down.

He yelled at me to SLOW DOWN! about a month back when I was driving UNDER 20 mph. I stopped my car in less than it's own length and wrote down his address. Told him I was going to file a complaint with the Department of Children and Families because he was endangering his children due to his own neglect.

Haven't seen those kids in the road since. :clap:

It sounds like you need more guy lines for your tent (olive drab of course) at about ankle level.

I had a similar experience when I was camping outside yosemite a few years ago. I was sitting at my picnic table with my girlfriend and this couple comes walking by my campsite with their dog off the leash. The dog proceeds to walk over to my tent and lift its leg. I yelled at the dog and they laughed, without a simple "sorry about that". That's just obnoxious.

YES! and make sure the fire is stoked nice and hot so they get a real life's lesson.

As a "generation Y, myspace (although not really), entitled kid," I just have to say that if I had committed any of the the above mentioned social faux pas, my mother would have tanned my a$$. Then again, I would not have done those things because it is very disrespectful. Even though I'm technically an adult, you will still not see this sort of behavior from me, and from quite a few of my contemporaries.

Just wanted to raise my hand as a representative for well-mannered youngins'. We do exist, I swear. Rest assured, when the time in my life comes to have children, they too will be taught good manners and respect. I have quite a few friends that feel this way, too.

Mom's favorite saying when I was growing up? "Spare the rod, spoil the child." Heard this alot as a little kid. And it worked.

It has nothing to do with today's kids. I can show you any number of folks from my generation that were just as clueless. According to my parents anyway. Different generations hold different things in respect. For example, we always went to the cemetery to plant flowers and make sure the graves were properly taken care of. I would have my head handed to me if I stepped on a grave. Totally disrespectful. It wasn't to me but it sure was to my parents.

I guess the trouble comes when those things we hold in reverence are not the same things held in reverence by others.

But, yeah, if your dog lifts his leg on my tent guess who's going home singing soprano. I'll give you hint, it won't be the dog.

But in the end, even if I don't value something, I can still respect it. It's a matter of common courtesy and decency. A lot of these sorts of things just go without saying, or at least they should.

I can point to all kinds of well meaning folks that allow their flags to fly in the rain. Disrespectful as all get out to me but I know they don't mean to be. Most just don't realize it is being disrespectful. They mean to be respectful and think they are doing a good thing but wind up being just the opposite. That's what I was trying to get across.

that's the problem today- people lack-common courtesy and decency-- and respect for other people and people's things.. i tend to be extremely outspoken when disrespected. people around here think i'm psychotic anyhow- so it's kinda fun :)

Good manners doesnt cost you anything.I live in a country with 11 official languages.Among the people working in my workshop I have Zulus,Xhosas,Ndebeles,Sothos,Swazis and Mashangaans.Everyone speaks his own language,has his own culture and believes.Some nations were sworn enemies and to this day struggle to work together.Respect for one another is very important.We are such a diverse society that we would not be able to function without respect.I must agree that some of the youth are arrogant,illmannered and rude and believe that is their right to behave in such a manner.
