i have a daisy pellet gun that is 1000 FPS but very heavy. i understand that around 700 FPS is enough to kill a rabbit but mine could drop a larger animal and shoot further. i was wondering if i should just buy a 700 or 800 FPS air rifle for survival trips and just use my 1000 FPS around the property for coons and ground hogs.

And just why are you shooting these animals?

Do the ground hogs and coons run that far? And why are shooting them? Do you eat them?

Do the ground hogs and coons run that far? And why are shooting them? Do you eat them? Both Ground Hogs,(?) & Racoons are considered varmits & are considered "targets of opportunities" by many farmers. Squirrels are the same way. I know of a guy that had the electrical wiring messed up under the hood of his van by a squirrel infestation, so he and his adult daughter (at the time, active military) used them for target practice. Rabbits can invade gardens & do a lot of damage as well. However, toughsord, & this is the bad news, the Daisy will not do you any good at all against zombies!:innocent:

WRONG! The squirrels saw YOU messing up the wires and were just trying to fix the damage YOU caused. :innocent: Remember, no good deed goes unpunished.

It's just an old Bob Hope bit, and you are probably not old enough to get what's funny about it. (Not meant as a slam to you, about being young.)
The old guys around here, might think it's funny.:innocent:

Toughsord,

I wouldn't go w' anything less than 800fps. The crosman 760 pump is around 700 and don't kill squat IMO. You can pump it all day and it just don't kill. The Crosman 766 powermaster? Kills! Not sure if that's the name, but, at 10 pumps, it shoots bb's at 795 fps. I, at age 13, would pump mine 20 to 30 times and it would kill coons and Groundhogs. At 10-15 pumps it would kill squirrel, pigeon and rabbit. You could pump it up to 40 times and see improvement. For some reason those rifles shoot steel bb's better than lead pellets, especially for killing.

I now use a GAMO hunter 440. It's a spring air piston, break barrel action. 1000fps. The extra weght is not a problem for me considering the killing power, accuracy and range it has. I shoot superdome style pellets in it and you can hear them hit the target. It passes thru rabbits and squirrels 50/50. I only take head shots w' any pellet rifle or bb gun, even w' my .22LR.

Toughsord - just how much heavy of an air gun are you looking for? You said that your Daisy Model 1000 was too heavy. I'm not sure that you will find an air rifle with the pellet velocities you want at much less than the 6.6 pounds that yours weighs.

Remember that cute freshman girl I was telling about? Well.......:tongue_smilie:
Nothing to do with air guns except why, if you have a 22 and can safely use it. I just don't like "fun" hunters and wounded animals. Always use enough gun.

"but the thing is that carring 4 five pound rabbits with the gun is rather heavy."

It is good for ya kid. Carry it around, and it will toughen ya up. Let's see, 4X5=20 lbs, then add 6.6 to get 26.6 lbs. That is pretty light. Try an 8 lb M16 with over 100 rounds of ammo plus a flak jacket with two fat plates in it, and a kevlar helmet, then add water and more gear. 26 lbs sounds pretty light. :sailor::m107::tank::gunsmilie:

6.6lbs thats a light airifle try carrying a wiehrachhw 80 round alday wieghs in at nearly 10.5 lbs with a scope siencer and a sling [you dont say if you have a sling on your gun ] if not get one then both hands are free to carry your 4 5lb rabbits ,why dont you clean your rabbits out as soon as youv shoot them they will be a hell of a lot lighter and its better to clean them while they are still warm lets the blood out and theres nothing worse than cleaning a cold stiff rabbit its yuk.

If your folks are ok with you killing critters, and its all in the name of saving the farm, why don't they buy you a Ruger 10/22 .22 rifle? Super accurate and probably more humane to kill the critters.

Or a nice scoped .223. I mean why use a hammer to do the job of a saw? At 13 I had a rifle and was taught how to use it safely.

Personally I dont like killing the furry things in the world unless its for food. But eh.

I am going to throw this out there. But do not for any reason shoot a skunk with an air riffle. My neighbor and I shot one a few summers ago with my Gammo 440,1000fps.At a distance of about 6 feet. After the third head shot I went for its boiler maker.Well it dropped all right with a slight deflating sound. The smell afterwards can not be explained. My eyes started wattering and I thought I was going to loose my dinner.Three days late I swore I could still taste skunk.

2d2k..Its not the hunting that should worry you.Its the skunks.I found out later that the old couple up the street were feeding the family of skunks cat food. They thought they were cute.My Rotti had gotten one the day before and I'm pretty sure she found out that they dont taste like chicken.

in a field full of cute rabbits peacefully eating their evening meal ,dreaming of the doe that lives next burrow over ,there was a man with a single barrel argyle 12 gauge ,he lines up the biggest rabbit thats within range ,and bang the rabbit keels over dead ,but where have all the others gone why they have gone to ground scared half to death wont be back out tonight theres something out there ,next evening along comes a guy with an airifle a hw 80 with guess what a silencer he see s the rabbits and gets into a position where he can line up the closest bunny to him about 25 yards away phut goes his rifle the rabbit drops dead a clean headshot all the other rabbits rise up to see what was that phut no worries its nothing so they get back to eating the guy with the silenced airifle takes aim at the next closestbunny and again phut same thing happens the one he aims at is dead the others take a breather look about see nothing and go back to eating ,the moral of the story is if they can hardly hear the airifle and the guy shooting remains down wind they will carry on eating while he picks them off one by one like the buff hunters used to do over your way,its only when the shooter hits a rabbit thats to close to another that thing go a bit pear shaped.
