are fish like chubs and shiners a good survival food? i know they are edible but are they well flavored and a good enough taste to be able to enjoy them?

Rick

Survival isn't about flavorful. It's about, well, surviving. If it's edible, it's on the menu.

Yeah, I think if I ever was hungry enough my odor-eaters might fall victim to a forked stick!

i totally agree with you but if you had to shoose between something like berries or rabbit and creek chubs which would you choose. im just wondering if it is a good survival food

You are not reading the answer. Survival food is anything edible that keeps you alive. That's why it's called survival food. Otherwise, choose a food that you enjoy.

ok is it an enjoyable food

Rick
07-14-2009, 06:37 PM
That's for you to decide isn't it? What I find appealing or distasteful holds little relevance to what you might consider appealing. Catch some, clean and cook them. Then you'll know if YOU find them "enjoyable".

Like Rick says, people have different tastes. Survival is making do. It may taste like crap, but it keeps you alive; understand? If it's great tasting food your after, tune into a cooking show! Now I'm not advocating eating the nuts out of animal droppings or squeezing water out of elephant turds, or even drinking your own urine; however, in a survival situation you may have to kill & eat your dog or cat to survive. You might even be in a position like the Soccar team who's plane went down in the Andes ("Alive!") & be forced to eat your dead! Your tastes will change with your state-of-mind. Remember, Survival ain't no game, boy; it's "Life or Death!" :cool2:

Fortunately, I'll never be on a plane loaded with soccer players. Most flights I'm on finds me between Dom DeLouise and Pavoratti. If I survive long enough to crash my meals are covered.

No, think size. I once had a 400 pound woman try to sit in the seat next to me. It was bloody awful!!! The seat belt extension was a tight fit. But she spilled over into my seat. YUCK!!!!!! I stood in the galley reading the paper for most of the flight. When the flight attendant asked I just told her my seat number. She smiled that little, "Ah, yes. That seat", smile and went on her way. If we had gone down the whole flight could have eaten off her for months.

I think I met that same woman several years ago on a midnight flight from LAX to Logan. They upgraded her to a seat right next to mine because she couldn't fit in a coach seat. Once the crappy in-flight meal was over (OMG you should have heard her complain about the portion size!) I quietly asked the flight attendant if I could downgrade to coach. I did, and I had a lot more room. :sneaky2: Thank you, Continental Airlines!

As many others have said already " It ain't about the taste it's about survivin' " In a survival situation if your hungry enough even ants, grubs and other bugs (spiders not included) can taste like a gourmet meal. Remember as everybody else has said it's a matter of surviving

Why would you have to choose? They are all valuable in their own right. Rabbit does not have any fat, which you need, but certainly you should eat it if it's available.
Any fish can be edible and even tasty depending on how it is prepared.

Variety in meals not only helps your general outlook but also one food makes up for a lack in another food. Only eggs are a perfect food. So, enjoy some fruit with your fish.

i like improving thingsWe don't "improve things, Chris does that! We maintain order, kill "heathen Chinee Spambots" & ban Trolls! Here's some requirements:

Must be good at spelling.

You must qualify in one of these three areas: Have a former service record, be a: grumpy, Survival "Zen-master" & resident curmudgeon, or have some sort of weird fetish; like constantly wearing a full size Twinkie suit.

Know quite a bit about Survival.

Post at least 2000 Posts.

Know the average weight of a sparrow in flight.

When you have met all of those you submit your application & wait. If you haven't received a response in a couple years, re-apply. :cool2:
