Well here it is.
First aid kit, clean socks, esbit stove and fuel, cooking pot, mugs and spoons, torch (flashlight), 3 days of food, bar chocolate, energy bars, kendall mint cake, tea, sugar, dried milk, instant hot chocolate drink, knife and sharpening stone, tarp, cord, disposable multipurpose cloths, bar unperfumed soap, 2 2L bottles water, wind-up radio, copies of important documents, map, RAF survival tin, sweets, disposable poncho, bin liners, water purification tabs.
A lot of things I found in the house or I buy regularly
I’ve specifically bought
First aid kit, stove, wind up torch (flashlight) and radio, map and water purification tabs.
I’ve also rolled up a couple of old blankets and they now stay with the BOB.
As I have no transport, my thinking is this. If I have to get out short term this will cover my basic needs.
If the situation is longer term then I’ve come to the conclusion I’d be better off staying put. I have a woodburning range and access to plenty of fuel for it. I know of water supplies in the area and with the English climate I could make a water capture unit too. Each time I go shopping I buy a few extra tins etc to add to my stores.
The only thing I’m not sure about is long term water purification, I have the means of filtering water but I’m not sure about sterilisation apart from boiling.
What does everyone think?

I think you're off to a great start. You know your area and climate better than anybody, so just make sure you address the essentials - Shelter, Water, Fire, Food, Signaling. I'm not sure what you are using for filtering your water. There are some great filters on the market that you can use to filter water from a mud puddle and then drink it. They're small and light - may be worth adding. Looks like some of the items you have can be used to improvise a number of solutions to problems which is good. A few small items you may want to consider are small folding saw, whistle, signal mirror, money (small bills and coins), important contact numbers (you may already have that in the important papers you listed). The best test for you to be sure of your bags functionality would be to use it and try to live off of it for a few days. That will be the quickest way to determine if you are lacking anything.

Thanks Crash, I've got some cash and phone nos are in with the papers. The survival kit contains a mirror, wire saw and whistle among other things so that's covered.
Re filtering, at present I simply can't afford a proper water filter, but I've made one using activated carbon sandwiched between double layers of muslin, this goes in a sieve and works pretty well!
I'm also installing some water butts to catch rainwater from the roof, but again that's being done in stages owing to money shortages.
I've been for a 4mile walk with the BOB on my back and it's not too heavy, I'm loath to put too much more in it as there's not a lot of point having one if I can't carry it!
Good point about trialing it. I'll give that a go.

You've done a great job! Between what you've done and what Crash suggested I'd be hard pressed to add anything.
You have water purification tabs and boiling so as long as you can make fire you can make potable water. You can even boil water in those plastic bottles.

What's the word these days about hot plastic leaching carcinogens?
If I have the choice of dieing from dehydration or ingesting carcinogens I guess I'll go with ingesting them. It's a cinch I'll die without the water but I might get lucky and escape the cancer.
I certainly don't advocate that method as a first choice but as a last resort it's doable.
It's a good point, however, that you bring up.

While there may be some inherent risks in doing this, I would think that it would take repeated and long term exposure. Besides, you'd die of dehydration a lot quicker than you will of the risks of carcinogens IMO.
In Brazil I probably spend at least one month each year without water to my house. We have had to collect rain and get city water from other places. The last time it was off for a month they were trying to fix the problem of our neighborhood losing water so maybe we're done with that.
For treating large amounts of water at home you need two things, a gravity drip filter and chlorine bleach. Most people in South America have a gravity drip filter or two in their homes. Water poured in the top reservoir drips through one or more ceramic filter elements to the chamber below. If you are treating city water or rain runoff this filter alone is all you need. I use two of these in Brazil to give us drinking water upstairs. In our kitchen we use an inline filter that goes through an ozone generator but this system depends on electricity and the house water system.
Treating water with chlorine bleach is very cost effective, but bleach has a shelf life so stay on top of that. I'm not going to give specific dosages for bleach because it depends on what % of chlorine you have. If you use bleach for washing just buy two jugs and constantly rotate. That way you'll always have a fresh jug as you use up the oldest one.
Rain collection is fantastic when you have regular rain. Our water went out at our former apartment during rainy season. I rigged up a rain catchment system using a 12x20 foot clay tile roof as a collector and had literally tons of water in about 10 large plastic storage bins. I have also used plastic kiddy pools/tarps to collect emergency water. We used this water for washing dishes, flushing toilets, and bucket showers. Mac

Yea, no duh on the dehydration. I just dont think I'd practice with the plastic thing.
A note of caution on the chlorine. If you use it to treat water make certain it is NOT commercial bleach with all the softeners and additives. You want to use plain jane Sodium Hypochlorite. You can generally find it at stores that sell pool chemicals and equipment. A gallon jug is a couple of bucks. I keep it around to use in my bird baths and fountains to keep the algae down.

Right I've just had a look on the web for a water filtration system from UK suppliers and I think I'll be sticking with a homemade job for some time! Simple one man out in the bush types start at 69 thats about $100. gravity filtration sytems are about 300!!!!!
The longest I can recall being without rain is 5wks, so I don't think I'll dehydrate. I'll have a look at Picts video but in the meantime I think I'll keep it as simple as possible.

wolf Pack!) Here's a couple of ideas on water purification. If you can find some large, empty "tins" (#10 cans, as we in the colonies call them.) they make great boiling/cooking pots! I use the awl on one of my Swiss Army knive's & poke a hole right below the open rim of the tin/can; and fashion a piece of wire coat hanger for a handle...makes a great cooking pot! (Maybe your old "Scouting" manual has a section on cooking with "tins"?) Also tincture of Iodine works really well but tastes pretty bad. Just don't over-do it! I'm thinking that in England you can get certain things easier than we can over here so check on Iodine Crystals. Get a 1oz. small, brown, glass jar with a tight fitting lid. When you have to purify water fill the little bottle from 1 quart of the water in question, cap it, shake it, wait 20 minutes, & pour back into the remainder. (1 lb. coffee tins make a great 1 qt pot!) The iodine lasts indefinately! Also, those #10 tins make a great stove!

Why thanks Sarge! Winnie of wolf pack will do just fine!
The only tins the size you're talking of available to me are paint tins.... don't fancy them. Most of the food tins have a plastic coating but I'll keep my eye open for some without.
As for iodised water... bleugghhhh I have vivid memories of using that and potassium permanganate for purifying water from my girl guide days and I still feel queasy at the thought.
Have to go to work now.. I'll check out the links later.

This is just a 3 day BOB, as I already mentioned if it's for any longer I'd be better off staying put as I'm on my own most of the time, my son comes and goes.
I've got fishing tackle and a nearby stream has dace, rudd and other small fish.... BUT a 2 mile hike and I hit the motherload! a carp lake stuffed with fish. I caught an 18lb common carp there last year and that's one of the smaller ones!

Here's another thought though: In his book: "The SAS Survival Handbook", John "Lofty" Wiseman suggests a "mess tin". Oh I like Mr Wiseman, he did a survival series over here some years ago, I keep meaning to buy his book, a very intersting chap.
I found an old saucepan when I was first putting this together so I do have a cooking pot.
I'm trying to be realistic about things, the likelihood of a meth lab blowing up next door is remote to zero, a lorry ploughing through the house is far more likely.
As for long term situations, I don't think anyone can predict what the cause could be and again realistically speaking I know I don't have the skills to survive outdoors for long. So staying put makes far more sense. So now I have the BOB sorted, I'm concentrating my efforts at home.

As long as this thread has touched on the chocolate pick-me-up, if you know anyone that travels regularly, you could have them start collecting those coffee packets that are in just about every hotel room. You can toss them in to water, hot or cold, without percolating. Yeah, its a diuretic, but it is a nice to have.
And the same goes for soap and shampoo and, depending on which chain you stay at, those little sewing kits.

Well Winnie, I'd say that you've thought this all out pretty good! You've also done a lot of homework & get an "A" from me! The nearby stream is also a good water supply in addition to the rainwater "catch". I may have missed it, but did you say that you have maps of your area as well? In a disaster things can change drastically. Having a good map & compass, as well as the knowledge of how to use them, is a good idea. Other than that I agree with you that "Bugging in" is probably your best option in most cases!:cool2:

Well thanks Sarge, The map is 2 in 1. It's an OS map in large scale for the local area, then on the reverse there's a map of England detailed enough to get anywhere. Things would have to be REALLY dire for me to use that though. I've marked 3 possible locations to lie up that I know of(not that I need the map for that) just to say Wychwood jnr has the same map so he knows of the locations I might be. Forgot to add there's a button compass in the survival tin.
You know you've done a good job when Sarge gives you an "A". Not just everyone gets those. I'm still trying.
You might mark your locations in order of preference so Jr. knows the most likely location you'll be. Obviously, the type of event could force a change in plans but it's still a good idea to know in which order the sites are you'll be trotting off to.

Sadly these days Rick it's more a stumble than trotting, getting more like the tortoise and less like the hare as each year passes!
I know it's taken a while to get things together, but at least I've got it more or less right first time and I have a plan!
Getting my home sorted is next, lots to do here.
