Which would be better Money or The Stuff that Money Buys......????
Some people like to have minimal stuff, but are comfortable having (Hoarding) money in stocks, bonds, CD's, savings, etc..
Some people (O.K. Few, damn few) see money as useless, and inventorying money as high risk when you can have usable goods.
To be clear when I say Stuff that money buys, I don't mean the latest disposable cell phone, or Blackberry, Tooth Whitening gizmo's, or haircut; I mean tools, food, nails, buildings, solar-systems....Etc.
So if you could have $450,000.-- in investments (Savings, stocks, bonds, etc.) or you could have a Farm/Ranch/Homestead and all the tools, and clothes, fuel, food, etc......Which would you choose....???:)

In a perfect world you'd have your homestead and a good amount of savings protected in a diverse portfolio to include gold and silver (10-15% of total), cash (real paper money $2-5k), savings (3-6 months living expenses), stocks, bonds, and productive property (either income property or land that produced something you could sell, like minerals, food or livestock).
I've learned to oppose debt in every form except an affordable mortgage (affordable meaning that you could continue to live their if the cost of food and fuel went up to 50%of your income). That's generally 25-30% of your post-tax monthly income, not the BS loans Countrywide was giving out five years ago where it was 37% of your pre-tax income.
Living debt free gives you choices. Cash gives you choices. Productive land gives you choices. Debt, no cash and land that's a money-pit like most suburban homes take away options. You can't leave that crap job with that jerk of a boss if you're in debt. You can't get the "optional" surgery to fix that hernia if you don't have cash. You have to keep paying whatever the grocery store asks for the crap quality produce if you don't have productive land.
Personally, I'll take both.
I agree with Endurance. It doesn't seem like an either or to me. What good would the ranch alone be with no money to run it or maintain it? If those are my only two options then the money. As Endurance said, it gives you more choices. By the way, who says stuff is more gooder than money?

It has nothing to do with billions or estates. That ranch requires money to operate. You provided two choices. It's simple math. If you don't have money than you won't keep the ranch very long. The worse case is it will fall down around you for lack of maintenance....since you have no money. But as I said. Of those two choices, I'll take the money for the increased options.

RICK, Well what if the the money was no good......Hyper'Inflation....OR what if you had Money and needed water and was dieing of thirst, but no one wanted your money. My point is we assume that money can always be used to buy the things we want......but what if there is little or no food, what good is money if I need Pants....? Like you have said about Gold, you can't eat it. If I have 35 pairs of work pants, I have those pants, I control those pants, I can use those pants. If there is no trucking/distribution and I need pants and have $6,000.00 what good is it. We assume goods will always be available. But what if they are not available...? We assume our money will always have value, but what if it does not......history is full of examples of useless money. I have a big box of mining stock certificates my Grandfather bought in the 1920's. In a period of hyper'Inflation things go up in value, and money goes Down in value till it is worthless.......
Okay. If you want to start adding "what ifs" then what if that ranch was built on a fault line and was infested with moths that would eat all your clothes? What if your neighbor suddenly blocks the flowing creek and refuses to give you access to the water?
All I'm saying is, in the scenario you offered, with the money I have the option of buying something else or not. I can put it all in pants if I want to. Or split it between food and clothes. Perhaps I'm incapable of managing a garden or harvesting food. Perhaps I have a disability the money would better assist with. I understand the point you are trying to make. I just don't think it is valid given the very strict confines of the offer and the many variables that folks might encounter.
If the ranch, et.al., works for you, go for it.

Maybe you sell some beef, or what ever excess products you grow.......?
I have poultry, and I have to buy some feed in the winter, but I have fresh eggs, and fresh meat daily. And I could sell the the excess eggs or trade them for feed. I would rather have the poultry than the equivalent value of cash. At some point in the last 50 years people started hording money, and hoping it would buy what ever they needed. 150 years ago, people felt secure, with a sturdy home, a bountiful harvest of crops, a supply of firewood, etc.
150 years ago, people bartered. A perfectly acceptable means of trade. Money just makes that same trade geographically more diverse. I can trade with someone in California without have to tote my rocks out there.
In my mind, it has nothing to do with hording any more than putting up that firewood is hording. They are both just a hedge against the future. Something could happen to my money and fire or termites could devastate your firewood. There really is no difference between the two. Both serve a purpose, both are convenient to the holder and both have benefits and liabilities. The only difference is in how a person views each particular hedge.

I agree lady. I would rather have a ton of 16d nails than money in the bank, I trust the nails, I don't trust the bank. I would rather have a back-up water well for $3,200.-- it is there I can see it, than have $3,200.-- CASH dollars in stocks or bonds.
Hopeak - You don't even want it in cash. But where/how did you pay for that $3200 well? Eggs? (that would be okay but that's a might big chicken)

Rick, Your over thinking this......If I sell something I own like a truck tomorrow for say $38,000.-- or the Dozer, If I sell something, I put the money in the bank. But right away I think what good is that....? So I start buying wheel barrels, a small barn, extra chain loops for the chainsaws, stuff I can see, touch, feel, real things I will use someday. I like the security of having nearly everything I'll need for the next 15 years. I understand You like having the investments, and if you need it buy it. Hence the point of the thread.

There really is no difference between the two. Both serve a purpose, both are convenient to the holder and both have benefits and liabilities. The only difference is in how a person views each particular hedge.

Pay cash for everything. I don't have an estate but I don't owe a dime. I don't know of any thing I want material wise. You get independent and still have $$ invested in good, diversified mutual funds which I don't even look at. You can have it both ways with hard work, luck and I happen to be a Christian and personal opinion only I am thankful for everything, good & bad learning experiences.

I guess I'd want the $450k ranch with a $100k mortgage on it and $100k properly invested. If I have a $450k ranch and no cash, how am I going to pay my property taxes? What will I do when my inverter gives up the ghost or my generator runs out of gas? How am I going to pay my homeowners insurance?
I also plan on continuing to work, both on and off the property. I'll make double payments when I can on the mortgage, and deal with the $700/month regular mortgage payment without losing any sleep when money is tight.
I just see a false choice set up in the question. If I was given the $450k, I'd certainly invest most of it into land. If I was given the property, I'd certainly pull some money out of it if I didn't already have reasonable savings. That's called not keeping all your eggs in one basket. Someone once told me that was a pretty good idea.
