This might not exactly be a survival application, but I keep a sealed 5 gallon bucket in the back of my pickup with dry kindling, newspaper, matches, etc. Sort of a campfire in a bucket.

Whiskey and Twinkies, but not in the same buckets. Everyday survival food.

Dry goods, beans, rice, corn, even some jerky. They can also be used as feed buckets at Wild at Heart if you need'em, yeah still love your place and the site is great.

This last month I put in buckets with rubber seals and Oxi absorbers for long term storage.

I used only the 6 gal buckets this month.

1 powdered milk.

6 wheat berry's.

2 hole oats.

1 dehydrated onions.

2 instant potato's.

2 pinto beans.

2 red beans.

1 Sugar.

1 Popcorn

I also have buckets with screw on lids(Gama) for daily use.

2 Dog food.

1 maple flavored cream of wheat.

2 Sugar.

1 pinto beans.

1 Navy beans.

1 Popcorn

It has been a slow month. I have only had the dehydrator running for about half the month.

I keep a few for myself. they're great for hauling the non-pershible grocerys to the campsite, then turn 'em over & they make grate camp stools. if you got a couple of spares and a long piece of plywood you can make a quick "table". I also dipped one in the lake & kept about 2 thirds of the bucket full of lake water by the camp fire for "fire prevention".

But the main thing we use them for is this. I pick them up every so often for the wife. She has me bore about 8 holes or so in the bottom. I use the awl on my Swiss Army knife to make the holes and place them in a sort of symetrical pattern, then give them to my wife. She then puts in her "soil" mixes & plants a "portable" garden. We can then move the plants in or out of the weather as needed and if you happen to move you can even take your garden with you. She does all the gardening as I have a "brown thumb".

You can also make a portable "field" toilet out of them as well.

It's safer to use than the one used by that old lady from Nantucket.

A couple of week's ago, I inquired at Kroger's if they used food grade buckets and what they did with them when empty. They just throw them away. Talk to the bakery folks. Unless that particular store has heartburn about liability they should give them to you.

By the way, I'm trying the potato in the 5 gallon bucket trick and it's coming along fine! First time for me.

there once was a chick from nantucket, who kept all her corn in a bucket, along came a man, who looked in her can, and said,"???????????"

After a coupla months on this forum, I now know for a fact that all I need in any survival situation is a multitool, Duck Tape, and a Bucket.

Found a new place to get lots of food grade buckets. Every school in your area has a cafeteria. Every caf has a manager. Call the front office, talk real nice to the secretary (she's the one who knows how to get everything done), and tell her you need some food grade buckets and you know the cafeteria probably throws tons of them away. She'll patch you to the gal in charge and Bob's your uncle.

(I'd check and make sure your kid's lunch account is paid up before you go asking for free buckets, though. I'd hate for you to get strangled with a hair net.)

Don't forget to put plastic trash-bags in one, for a Porta-Potty.
