Last night, I got an experience what I have seen many other people have. I got to see the emergency response from a different angle. I lent my 17 year old daughter my truck. She got into a head on, classified as no fault, but it was bad. She got beat up pretty bad, but is going to be ok, the driver of the other car, were not sure about, but does not look good.
I have been involved with emergency response for the last 25 years, but never have I felt as helpless as when that phone rang, I was away from my home town, when this happened. For the first time in along time, I was scared. I met the ambulance at the hospital, and as I said, my daughter is going to be ok, but what a helpless feeling.............
Anyway...please send prayers and good thoughts to the driver of the other car....he is in bad shape......and can use the good wishes.

I received a phone call from some kid.

Are you Rick?
Uh, yeah.
Do you have a daughter named Ellen?
Uh, yeah.
She was just in a wreck.
When I got there they were cutting her out of the car. Fortunately, everything turned out fine. I'm going to keep my fingers crossed for you.

Get a copy of the accident report and talk to your insurance agent. In the outside margin is a number of codes. Those codes signify who was at fault and what percentage was assessed. Your insurance agent will have a cheat sheet to decipher the codes. It will be most helpful if you know everything the report alludes to. In my case, the responding officer coded it 100% to the other driver, yet his insurance tried to tell me my daughter had been assessed 40% at blame. Once I "explained" the report to them (p***ants!) they started talking real nice to me.

I know the feeling you have several years ago ( i have been an EMT/P since 1980) My local squad got called to an accident (head-on collision) about 14 miles from our base (volenteer unit) we responded and were on scene in about 18 minutes. first responders were already on scene. Upon exiting rescue unit i thought i recognized one of the cars. Yes it was one of my best friends since grade school. She had been drinking at a party. She died at the scene before we could extricate her. ( before we had JAWS). Nothing we could do fortionatelly the other driver lived. To this day when we roll on a call with the squad I.m with now I still remember that night and wonder if.......

3 years ago,my daughter left with a friend to pick up the other girls boyfriend,trip wouldn't take more than 15 minutes,and my daughter walked through the door within just a few minutes of that.

One look at her face,and I knew,the only thing she could do was scream "MOM,we have been in a wreck" and burst out crying. I ran to her,looking her over,assessing her injuries,and only found a few scrapes,and bruises at the time,all the while asking her questions about what happened and if her friends were ok,and calling 911 to meet us at the scene of the accident,calling the other girls parents,and running out the door,my heart stopped when we got to the scene a half mile from our house,and the car was on its top,after having rolled over a rather steep ditch,and back up into a farmers field on the other side.

Jade was the only one wearing a seat belt,a good thing,as her side of the car was bashed,the driver ended up in the back seat,and they all managed to crwl out of the shattered windows.

She was picked up by a neighbor at the scene and dropped off at home,that person never bothered to call 911,but they did call half the other neighbors in the area,gggrrrr.

Right before we left Brazil last August a guy came and banged on our front gate. "Your wife just had an accident down the street!"

I could see her Honda Civic wrapped around a cement telephone pole with a huge plume of steam rising up. That was the longest 200 yards I've ever sprinted.

She had just dropped off our daughter and went to fill the tank. On the way back she swerved to miss a cow in her lane (oncoming bus in the other) and opted to take out the pole. She was OK after x-rays, thank God for airbags and seatbelts. The 40 lbs of tools in the trunk had all slammed forward and took out the windshield on the passenger side. That would have killed my daughter if she had been in the car. It all combines to make you feel very, very small. mac

My prayers for all. I was driving home from work, had a car flash his lights to warn me of something. I rounded a curve and saw two ambulances, fire truck and EMS loading someone on a stretcher, saw my wife pull in and my son's car head-on with a pickup. Thank God he was only sore after being checked out, other person ran a stop sign, hit my son head on, no tags or insurance and suspended license. Don't think he lost anything but an old truck. Years ago and still can't forget that sinking feeling.

Mac brings up a very good point. Objects unsecured inside a vehicle will become missile's during a wreck. OR they will be like battery rams if you happen to be in a roll over. You could easily survive an accident with today's safety features only to be killed by something inside the vehicle clobbering you.

Also, I see a LOT of folks riding around in the passenger seat with their feet on the dash. What do you think is going to happen if that airbag deploys? Those feet are going to be driven up and back as their head is thrown forward by the momentum of the impact. My guess is they may well snap their back, their skull could be crushed or their skull could smash their legs. Whatever happens, it won't be pretty. Tell your family members, feet off the dash.

Yep to the missiles from the back,Rick. When I had my accident 10 years ago,I had just left the grocery,I had placed a 12 pack of soda in the back seat of the car,the flaps on the box was the front and back of the car,when the vehicles hit,the flap facing the front opened from the cans,which flew forward,hitting the back of the drivers seat,and the dash,leaving an imprint of the cans end in the dash.

Always put them in the trunk,or on the floor,with the flaps facing the doors.

Oh, gosh. I thought about it and forgot to mention. Remember those vehicle BOBs!!!! Those can get you, too.

If you have an extended cab pick up. You might run a strap under the seat and around your bag so it's held in place. I have an extended cab and the rear seats lift up for storage but there isn't enough room under the seat for my bag so I have a strap to hold it in place.

First, I'm am so glad your daughter is okay. I hope the best for the young man.

My wife always gets on me about loose gear in the vehicle. Heaven forbid I ever get in an accident in the work truck since I don't have an extended cab, the passenger side has tools and gear. The three outside tool boxes are packed.

Guess if I ever get trapped in the vehicle, I could just reach over and cut myself out.LOL.

Just an update on the other driver, he almost did not make it, but has, at last word, started breathing on his own, regained conscious, and is semi-alert....thanks for all the wishes and prayers.

glad to hear your daughter is ok. Hope the other driver pulls through. I know your feeling riverrat. I was on the local FD and we went to a roll over, it was my dad. I chose to leave the FD and work farther away from my family and friends. The only thing harder than working on my dad was asking him for his keys the next week.
