This is the proper way to use the wood burning techniqes employed by ancient people.

it took me a few dozen tries to perfect the process, but in this video i demonstrate how to make one perfect

I have some 1 year old seasoned elm I may have to try that with. I have a piece about 9 inches in diameter with a flat spot on one side that would work really well. I'd be a great piece for me to mess up.

Those "mess ups",add character to the work so dont worry about that.
let the fire do your work. after the coal burns in deep enough to crack into squares,dig into it with a stick and break loose the cinders. you can use snow crushed ice or wet mud to stop burning at the edges. you should have a good project.
