I have read about the hand drill and watched many videos on it. I want to give it a go. I leave in the southern part of the county and was wondering what is the best type of wood and spindle to use?

Not sure what is available where you are. Southern part of the country is a bit vague (Florida, Texas, Southern Italy, Southern New Jersey). There are a few threads on it. I'll find them and post links here. In the meantime, head on over to the Introduction section and tell us about yourself. Thanks. http://www.wilderness-survival.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=14

If you want more (there are many more) check out the search function (on the top tool bar). If you can't find it that way, keep asking - plenty of people that are willing to help.

No problem. It just makes it easier to give you good information it we know that kind of stuff. There are several folks from your neck of the woods that may be able to offer specifics.
In general - stay away from woods that contain a lot of resin - like pine. There will always be a little debate on the next thing I'm about to say - but make sure that you are using both a hardwood and a softwood for your spindle and fireboard (one is hardwood, the other is softwood). Some say that the fireboard needs to be the hardwood, others say the spindle....as long as you use both it should work. I'll let the folks from your area that know what wood is available talk specifics, but in general - that's how it works.

I have never used a hand drill, but I have heard of a few good ones: Here in NC, there is yucca, and Mullein, and cattail stalks. I don't know what to use for a base board. But for any friction fire method, make sure it is completely dry.
