Well, FVR started talking about rocks. I've been practicing (still have a long way to go). Here are a few that didn't snap in half that I've made over the last couple of weeks. I got a few of them thinned enough, but I think they all would be funtional. At the top of the pics is the elk antler billet that I've been using.

Crash,

Looking good. You need to get yourself some deer antler as they would make some nice knife blades and spear points.

Nice! Where did you get the "rocks" for making the points?

These are actually coral that I got from a customer/friend/teacher. I picked up a 5 gallon bucket full (traded for his pest control renewal). I still have about 50 lbs left, so plenty for practice.

Turned out another one today. I guess more accurately, I messed up two and had success on one.

One of the things that is both fascinating and rewarding (at least to me) is studying the rock, trying to figure out the best place to strike it. As you can see by the next two pics, working with coral (reeeeeally old coral) has some unique challenges. Note the impression of a sea shell in this piece.

One of the things that is really great about working with the rocks is that I quickly realized that while I do not yet have the skill to produce show pieces, very functional tools can be made. The next two pics are a piece that is razor sharp on the inside curve. A good skinning knife. This came from one strike on a larger rock. Not quite what I was planning, but as I've been told......the rock knows what it wants to be.

I've got a customer that is pretty well known for his knapping skills. I've always been amazed by some of the pieces in his home (thousands). His wife set up a knap-in for his birthday with about 15 folks of varying levels of skill. I was one of em. I've also picked up some great tips here from FVR and Canid. Looked at a couple of videos too. Then practice when the mood strikes.

I guess you never know what skills might come in handy at some point.

Yep. And they just increase my pool of available "resources." I get so many unsolicited open-end offers of help should the need arise. Never has. Hopefully never will. Sometimes I feel like I'm a Ross Perot without the $$$$$$$$$$$.

Crash,

You're inspiring me. Looking good. I dug out some rock last night, went through it and may start smacking some rock very soon.

You have the idea, the rock knows.

Nice work Crash! You're really starting to get it down. Where did you get the elk antler billet? It's a nice one that looks like it will serve you well.

The antler billet came with the bucket of rocks. I had been using a weighted copper covered billet. He had a couple sitting around and tossed it in the bucket.
