so here i am way out in the bush with all 3 dogs cursing for not brining the camera as i come across pink lady slipper that i have not documented yet, we come over a rock outcrop and little brown dog starts barking and i hear and see a black bear sliding down a tree, figureing she ran off i forge ahead to look at claw marks when i come face to face with her, she is standing up and woofing at me, well little white dog and brown dog stay close to me but whippet goes nuts chasing barking growling, i am blowing on my whistle and yelling and waving arms and pull my 4 inch fixed blade, figure she is about 250 pounds and not going to get my dogs i can take her.
well as you all know i am and have done bear studies with the ministry and have gone into bear dens in the winter for radio collars but always with 4 to 6 folks and someone always armed and at the wildlife centre i have helped my freind with the bears and i transport cubs for them, but beleive it or not this was my first one on one encounter in the wild, man it reminded me of the first time i got hurt riding a bull or the first hard punch i took in the cage and you loo at it going ok not so bad lets do it again, thats the way i felt facing down this bear awesome adreneline rush, finally about 10 minutes am able to back off enough to get away.
so i call my bear expert and tell him about it, ben tells me because the bear came flying down the tree most likely was a sow with cubs up another tree and was protecting and not running away, so tommorrow after work i am going back up sans the mutts with camera to get pics, i am all jacked up that was great, firday i get to go release 7 bears with ben, will be fun
