I finished converting two 55 gallon barrels into rain barrels today. Since I live in town they have to be "pretty" so the home owner's association won't raise a fuss (Oh, the price we pay to be "civilized"). Anyway, I am now an official conservator of water.
Your Minister of Science is always at work ministering or scienceing or whatever. You know what I mean.

I always thought in case the big SHTF...i would poke a hole through the ceiling, tarp the roof and let the water collect in a drum inside...pretty stealth right ?
But then i realized that i lived in LA...and it never rains down here anymore.
And if it does it has that whole Ozone/Smog component.

I have a small I think 45 gallon fake-plastic-half whiskey barrel and I mean a vertical half, so it can lay flat against the wall. But its attractive, so no big deal. I've seen on TV people getting huge tanks and burying them (or putting them in a shed). When I had the gutter people come by to reroute my gutters they commented that one time they installed one in a barn.
The problem I have with it is it gets full really easy in a storm, and of course water pressure. If I install another one (which I want to do) I would put it up on blocks to allow gravity to work better when filing a watering can (or when hooking it up to a soaker hose). The big ones use pumps of course.
Pictures promised and pictures delivered. I'll start at the top and give you a play by play so you know what I used.....
I didn't think about taking pics during the install or keeping a price list so I'll go by memory on some of it.
I picked the barrels up at Rural King. Both cost a total of $27.50. They hold 55 gallon each and were a formed one piece barrel. So I cut the top out of them.
I cut the gutter off at the required height and used valley flashing to form an elbow. I then spot riveted it to what was left of the down spout. I'll paint it to match but that's what it looks like at the moment.

This picture shows the top of the barrel. I used fiberglass screen wire to keep out the skeeters and prevent it from rusting. It's held in place by a 48" bungy cord. I then added some nylon string just as a safe guard. You can see the bungy around the top of the second barrel.

The wire you are looking at below is 1/8 inch smithing wire. You can pick it up at Ace Hardware or most hardware stores. I used it to support the screen wire. I cut some pieces to sit in the lip of the barrel then soldered all of the pieces together.

I used boiler bibs and what you are looking at are home made gaskets. You can buy a sheet of gasket material at Lowe's. I cut them to fit the bib nipples, added some J.B. Weld to help seal around the hole in the barrel then used vanity plumbing nuts (I think that's what they are called) to lock everything in place. I let the J.B. Weld cure over night. I did the same thing with a 1/2 nipple to connect the two barrels together at the botton. So you are looking at the boiler bib and the connector nipple in this photo. If you're thinking one looks like it's on backwards you are correct. The 1/2" nipple was too short through the wall of the barrel to screw it on flat side against the barrel so I had to thread it on backwards. Still works.

And finally, the whole shebang covered with privacy trellis (Lowe's again). I wasn't joking about the Association. It has to be covered. You can't even see it from the street. That's a no-no. I don't mind because I'm going to plant Scarlet Runner Beans on it to cover it and to give me some additional veggie space.
The platform they are sitting on is 24 inches above ground level so that should give me some water pressure and space below if I need to fill a water bucket or sprinkler bucket.
That's it. As you can see, we've already collected a bit of water from the rain last night. Knock on wood, no leaks so far.

Do you have any trouble with "green ick" build up (sorry for using technical terms:) )? It would seem that a film may build up over time. Would a drop or two of bleach keep it away?

I know it's too late for the pictured projects, but if you use black material for your storage containers (won't let the sun light in) it will cut down dramatically on the algae build up. If it becomes a problem the containers can always be painted.
I keep a gallon of sodium hypochlorite to keep my water fountain clean so adding a bit to the barrels won't be a problem. By the way, you can get sodium hypochlorite at most pool supply shops and a gallon is only a couple of bucks. That will give you the bleach you need without all the additives.
We've had about three 1/8" or so rains since I made the barrels. At least that's the measure according to my rain gauge. Let's say 3/8" overall. I just walked out and checked the rain barrels and they are half full!!! I suppose it's just a matter of mathematics. 3/8" times the square footage of the roof and all that but I was amazed. There are around 55 gallons stored already.
Maybe a bit off-topic, but ........
The City of Fall River has a "CSO" system. Stormwater AND sewage mix together during heavy rains, and all of it gets treated at the wastewater treatment plant as if it was all sewage. Yep, it's a wasteful and antiquated system - they just spent $200M drilling a huge cavern in the granite below the city to create a "holding tank" instead of fixing the system itself, but....
The city NOW imposes a second sewer fee on property owners BASED UPON THE SQUARE FOOT AREA OF THEIR ROOFS AND ASPHAULT/CONCRETE DRIVEWAYS AND PARKING LOTS! The "logic" is that since they have to treat this stormwater (which they wouldn't if the system worked properly to begin with) the property owners who "generate" this stormwater will be charged a fee for it. :sneaky2:

How Fast Will Your Rain Barrel Fill Up? CG = 0.6 x R x A
CG = collected gallons
0.6 = the conversion rate for cubic feet to gallons
R = rainfall in inches
A = the square footage of roof area that is draining into the rain barrel
Roughly speaking, you will collect just over half a gallon of water for every inch of rain that falls per square foot of your roof. From just one inch of rain a 10' x 10' (100 square foot) area would yield 60 gallons of water.

Well, calamity struck this afternoon. We've had rain all morning. About 1/2 inch had fallen around noon. Just as the barrels reached capacity the whole works slowly laid over and collapsed into the yard sending at least 100 gallons of water through the garden. Man, was I miffed.
My wife had a plant right where one of the legs of the stand was scheduled to sit. So I moved the plant and packed the ground (what I thought) was really well. With all the rain we've had the ground saturated with water, the leg sank, and the whole thing tipped over.
The good news is it was built well enough that is sustained little damage. I tipped it back up and moved the end so the leg was out of the hole and it's doing it's job again. Looks like I'll have to add some stone to the hole to prevent a repeat.

You may want to consider putting a concrete wedge underneath the barrels to keep them tilted a wee bit toward the house. A sand box base may also work well.

I had placed a slight outward cant to the base so rain water that fell on the base would be diverted away from the house. It wasn't much but it was there none-the-less. Apparently, it was enough to move the whole thing forward when the leg sank. With that much weight sitting 24 inches off the ground it just rolled right over.
Mom told me.
It's amazing that some Moms will go to such lengths.

After I get out in the real world and start making money and my wife and I buy a permanent residence (read 50-100 acre ranch, with Bug-In abilities), I plan on putting a 5,000 gallon tank under the house that the rainwater will collect in. Has anyone here done this?

I've been tracking my water usage out of the rain barrels this year and since June I've been averaging about 100 gallons a week. I would have been water in May but it was a terribly wet month. On a normal year, I suspect I would water from May through September or 5 months. At 100 gallons a week that's 2000 gallons of water!!!! Our water rates here are $2.017 per cubic foot. Since there are .134 cubic feet per gallon of water that comes out to a savings of $540!
2000 gallons X .134 gallon per cubic foot = 268 cubic feet.
268 cubic feet X $2.07 per cubic fott = $540.56
That doesn't include the energy required to pump and process fresh water or the cost of the chemicals to treat it.
All in all, I think that's a pretty substantial personal and environmental savings.
I thought I'd toss this out for those of you that might be considering collecting your own rain water. Your savings will vary depending on how much you collect and use and on what your water rates are. However, even half that would put a lot of gear in your BOB.

Nice set up, Rick, something simple, in-expensive, good looking and effective.
Kinda funny that "rain barrels" have been "re-decovered",....................... My Grandmother had one for watering her garden.
Old time "common sense" is now called "Green", I guess.
Here is a couple of pic's of my system at the place.
Mostly used for a shower, early version was sorta solar (coiled 50 ft hose on roof) converted to small water heater, later.
Pump is a 12v sprayer pump, on 110v to 12 v converter from Colman cooler, can be used either 110v or 12v (battery).
Plastic barrels are oblique, so blocking UV's help with "green slime", left barrel, enclosed in box with hinged top for pump, right barrel "painted blue", with plastic paint designed for plastic furniture.
Both have hose bibs, holes drilled with Forstner bit, sealed with silicone, and just screwed in.
Has worked well for 7-8 years, but only used for fall draining, cleaning, and washing hands after working. Rick's method, much better if you are going to use frequently.
Other features; first flush, with weep hole, small hole it top for over-flow.
Tanks are separate, water pumped from blue tank, filtered with cheap pool filter/pump.
Helps keep "stuff" out of storage barrel.
I do add bleach to both, keeps "stuff' from growing.........probably wouldn't need it in a "watering barrel set up".
Noticed that they are kinda tipping forward a bit, (last time I looked), so plan is to empty, lift platform with tractor bucket, block back up level.

One thing I did not install was an overflow and I probably need to do that. Although overflow is pretty much automatic when it rains I'd prefer to route it away from the house.
My grandfather had a water barrel just outside his back door that caught the rain off his rather small roof. He had a well, too, which was his bathroom. It consisted of a shelf nailed to a tree, a metal bowl for holding water and a round mirror nailed to the same tree. A bar of soap was on the shelf. Shaving was optional in the winter as i suspect was hand washing on some days.
