Ok folks, lets hear what knife/knives you won't leave home without.
The idea is this:

$0-$30
$30-$50
$50-$100
$100- and up

Keep in mind, this will be OUR suggestions and our way of trying to help each other as well as new comers make an educated choice.

By the way, aside from price, the choices should include:

FIXED BLADE
Full tang (Mora is acceptable, even with it's partial tang)
Quality
Availibility

In the $100.00 and up, if you choose a custom knife, include maker and price.
We'll keep this thread open for a week. After that, we'll average the knives out, post a poll and vote.

Even though it's NOT full tang, it's pretty close, so my suggestion in the low range is the Mora as it has been recommended by some survival experts. If it doesn't qualify say so & I'll pick another.:cool2:

Personally, I'm a bit biased toward my Buck Zipper, model 691. Costs about $70. I've found I can put it through quite a lot and it still works for me. I'm also biased towards my personal modified kukri. Bought it for $30, ground the handle to fit my preference, cord-wrapped the handle, re-covered the original sheath, and sharpened it. Both are readily available, especially if you have an eBay account. Both are full-tang and I consider both to be high quality.

That's ok.
The thing is, not everyone will be able to find something like your kukri, but it doesn't hurt to mention things like that.

$0 - $30
Mora

$30 - $50
Ontario SP1 Spec Plus Marine Combat

$50 - $100
Don't think I paid over $50.00 for any of them, though they're probably over $50.00 now 25 years later.

$100+
Never owned one. Probably never will, either.

I forgot to state the knife should be a fixed blade.
Sorry Ken, we'll do a multi-tool thread next.:blushing:

$0-$30

Victorinox Midnight Mini Champ (just under $30, I never leave home without it, and use it constantly)

$30-$50

Buck Nighthawk (a little less than $40, good value if more expensive knives are out of your price range)

$50-$100

SOG SEAL 2000 (a little more than $80, this is my primary, the largest knife I carry)

$100- and up

Cold Steel San Mai III Recon Scout (about $200, a shorter version of the Trail Master. I have a Trail Master, but general concensus here is that a shorter knife is a bit more useful)

Are we going to pay to have our name etched on theblade like some other forums and wilderness schools?

Is it an edc with a 2.75 to 3.75 inch blade? Or 4 -6 inch blade?
Handle edc - 3.5 to 4 inch, or 4 -5 inch?
A clip point or a drop point?
ohh.. so many questions...

I think the Bushman is one of the best buys, BUT, it's big, it's heavy, it's scary looking and it's not a knife a newbie is going to strap on for a days outing (nor would I). JMHO

OK so i wanted to make sure I got it right on the spelling from my earlier spelling mishap so I did some homework on my knife of choice.

It is a Rostfrei Solingen. "Rostfrei" means "Rust-Free". Solingen is the knife capital of Germany. Overall length is 9.25" and the blade is 5.125" so I was wrong about it being 12" too. Anyway it is a great knife.

on the High side price-wise, has a great return policy: If you ever become dis-satisfied with any knife, you can return it for the full purchase price. You can also call them & find out how those knives are made.:cool2:

From what I understand (from the knife forum where I learned about these) they have a full tang. The member got one of the VG-10's and was rehandling it with green canvas micarta. He said he took the knife and cut a Coke can in half, then cut a branch the size of his fist (took an hour), then sliced a peeled orange (?), and said the blade was still razor sharp. Now that would be a good youtube to watch. But as Sarge said, call and find out. A.G. Russell is a good company to deal with. I was waiting for them to start selling knives under their own name. :art:

Remember folks, these are "fixed blade" knives, the "folder section is a whole other thread. Also "availability" will be factored in. A favorite knife that is not readily available to the general public should not be considered as a suggested knife for a "Newby".:cool2:

And I think Sarge said a knife where everyone that wants one can buy it.
