Well it took me two days to build this including building a workbench and 3 trips to Home Depot for materials but it is finally done. About $60.00 in materials so much cheaper than buying one.

Thanks, I'm pretty happy with it.

Nice Job......Great place two hide firearms, with the blankets and comforters.....Well done.....:) You could go in business, and make them as entry benches, that hide the Bug Out Bag, by your front door.

Leave it to an Alaskan to think of that.:)

I build country craft type stuff myself. Its hard to buy the materials and get a decent price for stuff. People want something for nothing. You got 60 in materials, and that would take me probably 3-4 hours. Is it a blanket chest?

I couldn't belive how expensive materials are. I used all 1"x4"x10' and they were over $5.00 a piece. Iwas going to make a small 4'x5' deck for my grill but composite deck material was $26.00 for a 10' section. Expensive stuff. This bench is for her garden the next one will be be by the door. Plus I need to build a small table with shelves. Too many projects so little time.

The composite is crazy high but should be permanant. Lumber has went up no doubt.

Nice job. Any excuse to buy a took eh? :) Its always more satisfying to do it yourself. Now plan the next project around another new tool :)

Thats a fine box, looks well built. I do a lot of rendezvous. i've seem boxes like that go for as much as $150 to $200.
You did a nice quality job. I love the feeling of accomplishment when it's done. One suggestion. You might want to add a catch chain or lid support to keep the lid from opening too far. I don't know your application but if it sits anywhere the lid can be opened all the way then the stress on the hinges will cause them to tear out of the wood. You'll be sick if that happens.
They make all kinds of supports in just about any kind of metal finish you could want. Just look around on the internet.
Here's a couple of pics for examples and how they are used.

Another consideration when making a chest is a piano or continuous hinge. It just adds some strength in the hinge area and makes it less likely to break out. Again, you can get them in any size and any finish.

Nice job!!!!!!!

Rick, the last box I made I simply used small brass chain to keep the lid from over-extending. Very cheap too.
Yeah gave me a real good excuse to buy a miter saw, finally.
Nice work there, Doug!
Miter Saw, huh? A few weeks back, I PM'd Sapper and told him that someone swiped my miter saw. Now, I hope someone just "borrowed" it out of the garage (I didn't put it back in the basement) without asking. Nonetheless, I believe that some :cursing: stole my :cursing: Makita! :angermanagement:

Man sorry to hear that. How did they get it in the garage? Mine is a cheapo Ryobi $89.00 from Home Depot. Does the job so no need to go all out and spend the big bucks.
Bulrush - You bet. As I indicated, a catch chain will work just fine. Anything that keeps the lid from over extending.

The kids feel it takes too much of an effort to push that little button that causes the garage door to go up and down. I'm just grateful the basement was locked. It's like walking into a Home Depot AND a Sears Tool Department down there. :innocent:
