Just flipping through the TV and saw this new show on discovery, premier started like 5 minutes ago. 9 people stranded in the alaskan wilderness. Looks interesting, about survival.

Just started watching it after Deadliest Catch. I think that would be a blast, but it looks as though a couple are struggling early.

Idiots put up a fish net between two rocks in a rapids area like a volleyball net thinking they were going to catch lots of fish, and their confidence in this scheme was palpable. I would have built a frame and used the net to make a fish trap box which I would have placed in the deepest calmest part of the river I could find.

They will either learn, or fail.
Chris

... they were so sad the traps they set a few hours ago in daylight had no rabbits... because rabbits are always out in the middle of the day running around...
I get the impressions those guys have ever liked only fished at a fish farm. You can't throw a rock at a bunch of trees and spook 2 dozen rabits, 10 pheasants, and 50 squirrels.
Chris
04-14-2009, 10:44 PM
these guys who keep fishing are idiots... I think they wanted the job because it was the "manly" thing but really they don't have a clue what they're doing. "Oh sure, I've got testosterone, I can fish."
So apparently they have lines and lures too. How about putting all the lures on one line spaced evenly and stringing it across a river, then while that is passively fishing for you, you can go forage for wild edibles or something else.
crashdive123
04-14-2009, 10:46 PM
I dare say that if this group started foraging for wild edibles at this point they would poison themselves.
Chris

Supposedly they had some survival training prior...
Totally surprised that girl went home.

The show is called Out of the Wild, The Alaska Experiment. The nine people are dropped off in central Alaska and have to make their way to civilization through a series of check points. At these check points they have some additional materials (last nights was the frame of an old trappers cabin and a wood stove. http://dsc.discovery.com/tv/out-of-the-wild/out-of-the-wild.html
Here are the volunteers for the show. http://dsc.discovery.com/tv/out-of-the-wild/bios.html
Each participant was only allowed to bring with them the items provided in the list below, along with one personal item of their choosing (a photograph, journal, etc.). They were taught to make Yukon Packs to help carry the items, weighing over 50 pounds, along their journey.
Yukon Pack Contents:
Sleeping bag
Bed roll
Dry bag (incl. three pairs of socks)
1 extra pair of shoes
Gloves
Hat
1 extra jacket
Whistle
1 can of bear spray
Compass
Leather needle
Rope for Yukon Pack
Shoulder straps
1 personal item (participants choice)
GPS locator
In addition to the essential items above, the participants were allowed to take with them anything they wanted from a large pile of items found at their drop-off location. Spoiler Alert: They chose to take everything, including the ukulele!
Items at Drop-Off Location:
Large wash tub/basin
4 small animal pelts
Trapper tent (weighing 45 lbs)
Rusted machete
Large iron kettle
Rusted axe head
Basic first aid kit
Large swede saw
1 pair of crampons
2 classic survival manuals
Old trapper coffee pot
Small canister coffee
Large sack of flour
Old used snowshoes
Binoculars (1 lens broken)
Condoms
Tin types
Large ammo cases
1 bear keg
1 ukulele
1 roll of plastic-wrapped toilet paper
25 of hemp rope
Hatchet
Mens watch
Snow shovel
1 gallon plastic bag
Gun (.22 rifle)
Water purifiers
Small camping knife
Wind-up lantern
2 unlabeled cans of food
I really chuckled at it. They didn't do too bad rigging a shelter but the goofy thing had a stove so where do they try to build a fire....outside! You don't see smoke coming from the chimney until a day or so later. And they effort they put into making a fire was pretty incredible, too.
Chris
04-15-2009, 08:47 AM
Ya, it cracked me up that guy spent all day trying to make a fire, then the woman comes in and has it going in 5 minutes.
And what was with the guy carrying the snow shovel? What did he think he was going to use it for?
I understand these folks are "everyday joes", most with no wilderness experience but some of it is common sense (which some of them seem to be very short on as the one gal noted).
Darn! Missed it! Wonder if it will be on again?
Last night was the opener and it's on again Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m. Eastern.
It's part of the Out of the Wild: The Alaska Experiment. The title of the show is Stranded in Alaska.
Here's the schedule of shows.

I'll bet they grabbed the snow shovel because they were thinking - hey this is Alaska - it snows up here doesn't it?
It's the Ukelele I'm having trouble figuring out - well, except for snare wire, fishing gear from the string tensioners, water carrier, kindling....but just a hunch - they are not thinking multi use.
You just never know....

This is the second season I believe. I seen the first one and it was a joke. One group got severly dehydrated and had to be helped by the filming crew. Entertaining I guess but far from being reality. Just another show trying to glamorize the Great Outdoors with a bunch of people who have no business being out there.
The difference between last year and this is last year were small groups in different locations trying to survive the winter. This year is one group of 9 all working together to move from point A to point B. Same format, more or less, but a good study on what ordinary people do when confronted with problems they are unfamiliar with. In this case, survival.

I watched the show with great interest, and it just confirmed my opinion about main stream Americans. They don't have a clue. Americans have had it to easy for to long and they don't know how to provide for themselves. I will continue to watch the show just to see reactions from the people.
After watching the show, I felt better about myself and my abilities, and I was also thankful for forum's such as this one and all of the fine people willing to share and help one another. Thank's guy's.
So it's kinda like Survivor without all the stupid challenges and drama?
Well, I think it's a little better than that. I watched it last year and enjoyed it very much.
Lot of negative comments about the show, but for me, last year, it was very interesting. Just remember, this is not about survival. This is about entertainment. I'm not sure how well any of us would stack up with a camera crew shooting every move - especially if they get to edit it afterwards and stick in all the "entertaining" bits where you screw up. Leaving out, of course, any bits where you might shine.
On television, if it's done well - you feel exactly what the producer and director want you to feel. In this case it might be something like, "What a bunch of idiots," and "I could have done better."
I don't know that any of them are old enough to remember El Kabong and Quick Draw.
but there must be at least one who's wanting to say "Hoooollld on thar, I'll do the thinnin' round here!"
There was one gal that was all alone. "I'm saving myself for the common sense. There seems to be a lack of it around here." Paraphrased of course but I got a good chuckle out of her. She's watching these dunderheads and she's just as cold and hungry.

Just watched it not bad. Seen 5-6 mistakes within the first 10 minutes. Kinda funny.
1st mistake- not following the map and going around the mountain.
2nd mistake- not taking boots off before entering water
3rd mistake- not facing upstream towards the current while crossing river
4th mistake- placing boots too close to fire and almost melting them
5th mistake- not sharing the mouse with the whole group
Those are just a few I caught while watching.

Yup, Yup, and Yup, i agree with all that's been said. I just couldn't believe that they were all standing around the fire saying how hungry they were. Ummm......get your a$$ out of camp and do something about it!:online2long:

I think that this show is a relatively accurate portrayal of what would happen if you plucked somebody out of their comfortable, cityfied lifestyle and plopped them into the wilds. Some would probably be shocked that they could not hail a cab and go to the nearest Starbucks. But I guess that's why they include the word experiment in the title of the show.

I can collect pile of food in any season, those hungry boys may not be using things like sumac seed, thistle seed, burdock pods, grass rhyzomes, mealy worms, and the foods of that nature. those things are abundant and everywhere, so many people pass up food like that hoping for that steak<but they never get it.

does anyone know where one cld get a "how to" on the yukon pack its self? I'm pressently using a 1921 Canadian military pack board, which does work, but am allways curious about other ways to comit portage.
As to the show, I was screamikng at the idiot "starting" the fire.."use the ******* magnesium you moron!" lol, city folk are cute when you dont have to evac them.
My actual preff is good Ole flint and steel, sparks when wet, and hasnt failed me in over 10 years. The char cloth is easy to produce, and tinder? Do I realy have to answer that? lol
hobowonkanobe, you can portage your way to our Introduction section and tell us a bit about your self.

Spoiler Alert in case you haven't seen it yet. Episode 2 proved interesting. The two most experienced people have quit. I guess the term "does not play well with others" fits. The group dynamics are quite interesting to observe. Seems like with the experience gone, and the weakest member gone they are doing a pretty good job relying on each other as a team. Sure parts were humerous, but so far it's interesting.
Dang!! Missed it!!!! Looks like Episode 2 is on again Saturday morning at 11:00 Eastern.

When they first took the washtub with them, I couldn't believe it. But the police officer used it to trap a groundhog. I didn't notice if they took it on to their third destination. It seemed their lucked changed with their hunting, and that lawyer from Chicago seems to be a decent cook.

You ever wonder how much of those shows are faked for the ratings? Like the producers sit them all down and go
"Hokay, for the first two episodes, you and you act like you know what you are doing. We are giving you a $10,000 bonus and then cutting you because you are bad for ratings. The rest you act like the biggest pack of tools you've ever seen, and we'll slowly progress you into something that resembles and 16 year old for maturity and skill level."

Actually in this show I think it is pretty straight up. They don't get kicked off the show, but rather they each have a SPOT beacon and can signal for rescue anytime they feel they can't go on, or whatever their reason to check out is. Interestingly (to me) the most experienced hiker (quit in the last show) said that he came to push himself to his limits. He was frustrated at having to wait on the slower hikers. I guess he found out what his limits were and that interacting with others was not included.

the fastest man in the group is always right behind the slowest. groups are an "everybody" involvement routine. and out there like that, teamwork that failed? reminds me of the DONNER party, who wasted away in the sierra's. every one of them a chief, not a single indian anywhere.

Need protein.
What was the deal with throwing rocks/sticks at the gopher when they had a gun? Seemed like a huge waste of time.

Seems like I've been the lone woodsmen in a group of city slickers a few times. It can be extremely frustrating - especially if you feel group (or your) survival depends on doing the right thing at the right time - and someone who knows nothing about it - always has a better idea.

[B]The two most experienced people have quit. I guess the term "does not play well with others" fits.
The same thing happened the first 3 seasons of Survivor, which I watched. The most experienced people were one of the first 3 people to leave. But can you blame them? You tell them how to get food and safe water, and they don't do it? Maybe disrespecting you, calling you a "know it all", etc. I'd leave too if I tried to help someone and they disrespected me.
It doesn't necessarily mean the experts "dont know how to play well with others". It could mean the experts are not going to waste their energy helping someone who doesn't want to be helped.

This is nothing like the CBS show survivor. Nobody gets voted off. There is no prize for finishing other than the personal satisfaction of having accomplished something. This group has come together very well in the way in which they are working. I guess when you take a $$$ prize out of the equation and relate it more to survival, people work together rather than stab each other in the back. Nice to see.

Check Hulu.com. Not only is it free, but it has shows from ALL the networks. May or may not have what you want, depending on the networks contract with hulu as to what content it can mirror. Some shows are on there for good (like, all of the old previous seasons) and some only keep the most recent 5 episodes or so. Some shows only have ~1min clips or so.
I don't watch the show, so I don't know if these are from it or not, didn't look to see if they are full episodes or not either. *shrug*

"If we don't make the shelter by nightfall we'll have to make a snow cave or something. But we don't have a shovel."
Dude, man up. You're walking in two inches of snow. Just how much snow do you think it takes to make a CAVE for cryin' out loud?
erunkiswldrnssurvival
04-29-2009, 01:13 PM
and snow caves expend a lot of energy, i would have to be there to realy see what i could use, i often use a fire to heat stones in my shelter entrances. when the stone gets hot it radiates heat for a long time. they dont shelter the way that i would in those cold conditions.and the food would be seed, and root plants and tree or shrub buds,ect..those things are harder to process but are more abundant and offer simular food quality.
Actually, the food was porcupine and ptarmigan.

These people 'think' they can do it, and are determined. Did you notice, the survivalists left early? I believe they couldn't cope with the rookies. That older woman, the guy from Wisconsin, the police officer? Anyway, getting to know who you're with, abilities, etc is a key component. It's better than survivor tho.....
I would love to be on that show. I'd give the viewers their monies worth.

I enjoyed the show. For having no experience, I thought they did a good job. One thing that really stood out (and I know that many of you already know this) is the need for food. Rule of 3's states that you can survive 3 weeks without food. That number is quickly reduced if you are hiking your way out through rough terrain.
You knew they were getting acclimated when the one gal started to take a bite and stopped.
"Are those fish eggs?" she asked looking at her spoon.
"Yeah. Protein." One of the guys responded.
(Shrug) she takes a bite.

I watched the entire series, I thought this show was well done.
I did not think so favorably of the "experienced" people. I got the sense that they were all talk, but weak on the followthrough. I thought they quit early because they had the mindset that it was going to be a campout.
Amazingly the least experienced members were willing to rough it, stick it out, and see it to the long run. I would rather be with those people, than the "experienced" people. The most important aspect to survival is a strong mind and the will to survive. An expert is no good if they are a pansy when TSHTF.
I look forward to the next one.
