what kind of leaves are safe to wipe with? how about something easily identified. Maple? Beech? Birch?

Well, the larger it is the better.

But ABSOLUTELY first, test it in your arm, and give it atleast an hour (plan in advance). If you get a rash on your arm you can deal with it, on your butt? Not so much.

i know a few others but can't think of the name but maple also makes a great band aid but i only use when it is green

DO NOT USE LEAVES FROM CORN STALKS, there very ruff. but maple does work well and basically any other large leef that is smooth and doesn't cause a rash. you could try burdock leaves there nice and large but idk about them and a rash .

the aster aka lumber jack toilet paper works well for those of us in the north and east do not know if it is found elsewhere

Never found any that were particularly comfortable, think pocket knife and shirt pocket before you go with leaves is my suggestion. If maple's available, yeah not too bad.

Maple works but a knife and a t-shirt works best.

only maple when they're green? being that colored(dry) leaves will break up upon wipe? or are you saying not to use for a band aid when not green?

Big white oak leaves have worked for me.
