I was in Boston yesterday, and as most times, wound up in Haymarket Square. Rather than a farmers' market, Haymarket is an open air produce market with around 100 vender stalls right across the street from the famous Quincy Market and Fanuel Hall.
Bargains, bargains, bargains! All fresh as can be.
Some examples:
1 case (12 1/2 pint packages) of Blackberries - $5.00
Huge Eggplant - 2 for $1.00
Thin Asparagus - 3 large bunches for $2.00
Scallions (green onions) - 3 large bunches for $1.00
Large Round Watermelons - $3.00 each
Large Baking Potatos - 6 for $1.00
Huge Fuji Pears - 5 for $2.00
Zucchini - 7 for $1.00
Yellow Delicious Apples - 8 for $1.00
Avocados - 5 for $1.00
Artichokes 4 for $1.00
Huge Red Peppers - 2 for $1.00
Yellow Peppers - 5 for $2.00
There were thousand of selections to choose from, with at least 100 different veggies and 100 different fruits displayed.
For anyone looking to can, freeze, or preserve fruits and veggies, a visit to a local produce market, if you have one nearby, can save you hundreds of dollars in just one trip. There are great advantages to growing your own, but at these prices, the market can't be beat.
