Hey guys, Im from northern NY, about a half hour outside of Canada and am in love with the forest/wilderness. What Im wondering is, what sort of jobs, or college education is there out there to give me a job in the woods every day. Im not one for law enforcement type of jobs. I love to go out in the woods, I love camping, and I would love a job where I would be able to just go around the woods all day. Is there any job along the lines of a "wilderness survival technician" or anything like that? Any input would be greatly appreciated from a young kid looking to make a career out of the woods that he loves!

Hey Nick - I moved your thread to Introductions. Welcome to the forum. All kinds of jobs - Forest Service, State Park Service, helper for a guide service, helper for a hunting service. As far as college - a friend of mine went to Paul Smith's college in upstate NY back in the 70's for forestry management. Sometimes things don't go as you plan though.....he's been a banker in Maryland for over 30 years now ---- probably wishing he was back in the woods.

Yeah, Paul Smiths is a really nice area, I am personal friends with the Rockafellers and was able to run around on the Rockafeller estate located behind Paul Smiths when I was younger. Paul smiths is a great school, however its 20,000+ a year to attend!! I cant afford that, however I was looking at the Wanakena Ranger school which is a part of SUNY ESF. They have a reputation of being one the the best ranger schools in the nation. I suppose thats definitely a very good route to take as far as getting a head start on this type of work.

Welcome to the forum.
Welcome home. You don't say how old you are so I'll offer you some general advice.
Don't forget about your state's DNR. New York offers both education and job opportunities in environmental conservation. You can check out education at:

and job opportunities at:

Outdoor jobs abound through the federal government. Several government agencies will even pay for your education if you agree to work for them for X numbers of years. Yes, agencies besides the military, but that's also a good training ground. You can look through federal jobs at:

Good luck!

Hello and welcome to the forum........
Get one of those jobs where they send people in to burned out/logged out areas to re-plant trees. You'll be poorly paid, get eaten alive all summer by bugs, work your hump off, but when you're a hundred years old you can take your great-grandchildren out and say, "See, that forest? Yep, yer Poppa made that forest"....
Or....see all those dead trees?
