My name is Matt and I'm from the burbs of Chicago. Been into the outdoors since I can remember. I've spent countless days hiking the forest preserves. Been backpacking before but was very ill prepared. Had to much weight with stuff I didn't need. Thats one of the reasons I am here. Another reason I joined is that I don't have the time or money for a survival school and would like to find someone in the Chicago area to teach me primitive techniques for fire building and such. Ive read alot about survival but I know that wont help like hands on.

Welcome home. There is certainly an advantage to having someone teach you any set of skills. However, you don't have to rely on that. You can practice many of those skills by yourself in your back yard or in the reserves. Concentrate on the basics of fire building, water purification and shelter building to start out. There is a ton of information on the forum and on the net in general. In addition, there are some excellent survival books on the market.

Use the Search feature above to search on subjects that interest you, pick out one or two that you would like to perfect then practice, practice, practice.

Hi, welcome to the forum... lots of information here... and most everyone has something useful to contribute... ummm... wellll... most of the time, anyways... (David studiously avoids looking over at one of the really old guys).

I used the search tool for the forums and have found a ton of information on every topic that I searched for!
