The new thread about a computer biting the dust made me think about (again) back ups. Does anybody use an off-site back up like Carbonite (sp?) and if so, what do you think of it?

Nope. Maxtor 500GB external. I have two for the house and two for the office. Automatic realtime backup PLUS hard drive image copy. EVERYTHING is encrypted.

Once a week, I swap.

Week 1: Office Unit 1 (for safe keeping) and Home Unit 1 (in use) are at the house and Office Unit 2 (in use) and Home Unit 2 (for safe keeping) are at the office.

Week 2: Vice Versa, and so on.

The stuff on my computer is way too confidential (client files) to store elsewhere. It goes WAAAAAY beyond mere liabiity.

Works for me.:)

I use external (usb) hard drives for back up. Similar scheme as Ken describes. Have too much customer and government info to take a chance on losing it. Also ,food for thought, think about this. The majority of those off site back up locations are located in and managed by people in foreign countries. Perhaps Ken can speak to this, but until fairly recently, in India it was not illegal to sell information that we would consider "customer confidential". The same thing goes for the majority of blackberry service, with rare exceptions, it is all routed through Canada.

Unlike most doctoral programs, Law School doesn't require you to write a thesis. The Bar Exam makes up for that. Instead, some schools have what is called a "writing requirement." I wrote mine in 1979. It was titled "Computer Security in a Law Office Environment." In 30 years, nothing's really changed except for the improvement in encription programs.

When I was a securities processing consultant in the '80s, we backed up everything overnight. Turtle speed modems (Hayes Smartcom 2400 baud!!!!) were state of the art. In one bank/government application, we actually designed our software to reformat the drive if anyone made 5 unsuccessful attempts to log-in via modem. We could always reload our back up and re-enter a day's work the next day.

Ken probably knows this but check your Maxtor saves if you use the one-button backup. I recently discovered mine was trying to keep too much backlog, had no scratch space left, and wasn't properly copying all new files.

I'd never store online. No way.

The forum database is backed up nightly and offloaded to a secondary location in a 5 day rotation.

My harddrive here failed last Spring, and the backup software that I thought was running every night apparently wasn't working right. I lost a lot, it wasn't that bad, most of what I lost had via older backups, but some photos etc are gone forever.

I need to here at home work up an off site backup system, haven't done so yet.

Unlike most doctoral programs, Law School doesn't require you to write a thesis. The Bar Exam makes up for that. Instead, some schools have what is called a "writing requirement." Exactly,, I have never been a fan of software safeguards. Physical security is the only "sure" method. We do physical disconnects nightly, and backups at work are "forced". Not very popular with some of the "geeks", but I explain that a vote was not requested :gagged: . Encryption is a fair delay device when used with the format hard drive option as login failure safeguard. Another thing to do is not mix business with pleasure, that is web surfing and visiting forums :yawn: should not be done from a business computer and business should not be conducted from the surfing machine.

Maybe not in a law office. But network security as it is today didn't exist 10 years ago. But whatever.

I don't have a subscription service, but I have a server at a web hosting company that isn't public facing. It sends it's daily backup, whether incremental or full, whatever, to my home network, and each machine in my home network sends the server it's backups.

I'm sure you could do the same thing for free via one of the free web hosting companies or a free shell account. SFTP or FTPS would optimally be the preferred protocol, but any service that would allow you to automate the transfer would work. But as Ken said, if it's not totally under your control. Even the web server I use is a potential vulnerability point, but since I have complete control over the firewall and the security of the server, it's a pretty minimal risk.

Without question, network security has changed. However, so has the threat level.

Thirty years ago, the threat was minimal, because very few systems operated with what were then very crude websites, and the internet was practically non-existent for all intents and purposes. Your protection consisted of defending your system from unauthorized direct dial-up access.

Today, the internet is the medium through which virtually all computer-to-computer communications flow (not so back then - virtually all communications were direct).

When I said "nothing's changed," I should have clarified my thoughts. I should have said that it's just as easy today to hack into a system as it was back then. With the software available today (algorithm based) even the most secure systems are as vulnerable as they were 30 years ago.

That is, unless your sensitive data is always offline and physically secure.

i keep my data backed up to a 1/2Tb external also, but i keep it at home and take my chances. if i had another i'd use off-site aswell. the only things i couldn't replace are the collection of recipes i'm putting together, my photos [which are slowly making their way into albums hosted online] and my CAD/Design work. pretty much everything else is frivilous.

A good place to start would be your local community college, can start as basic as you think you need to and go to fairly advanced stuff. Prices are relatively cheap. Also some communities have free adult education classes. I got most of my knowledge through the military and being nice to the Computer guys where ever I worked. Also, if you goggle computer education, I am sure you can find some online stuff that may be helpful.

I think it far less important HOW you back up rather that you DO backup. Even a portable hard drive can be stolen along with its data if someone breaks in.

I don't have any problem with off site storage of data. One of my jobs was disaster recovery/business continuity. We did full weeklies and incrementals that were housed off site.

I use Dell Data Safe Online for my personal stuff.

With most 256 bit encryption schemes your average hacker won't be able to crack it in time to make the data worthwhile. An email from 20 years ago probably won't be useful to anyone except the spooks, and then only if the statute of limitations on a crime hadn't expired or something similar. However, I have seen private individuals do things with encryption that would blow your mind. I'm talking piss your pants scary. While encryption is a great way to prevent Bob from accounting from viewing your porn collection if he happens to compromise your box or is sniffing your switchport, it should not be the only failsafe put in place because it can be circumvented in a few different ways.

Agreed.

Being uber-paranoid, I've actually hidden backup devices inside the sheetrock of the wall. A wooden or metal frame with plenty of fans on it for cooling can be placed around the device. If you're savvy with your wiring (keystone jacks are a great way to hide this) no one will ever know the device is there is you get quiet fans. Whenever I take responsibility for a site, whether it be a knew house/apartment or a new office, I setup my own security system that includes IP Cameras. The cameras are accessible from a SSL encrypted website only available via a VPN connection, but the recordins are also dumped to a storage device and held for 24 hours before moving offsite to my server.

I'm not currently using this setup since I eventually got tired of having to repair the holes in the sheetrock when we moved so I started streaming the video out to a storage site via site to site VPN, but it's a great re-assurance that if your place gets broken into, even if they steal your computer you can still get video footage of the people that did it.
