Have we got any ramp diggers or eaters in here? It won't be to much longer until a person can get out in the woods and start looking for them. Although I can't go running the hillsides anymore, I still like eating my fair share of them. I have to get mine from the grocery store now.
My wife and I plan on going to the little mountain town of Richwood, West Virginia this year to the annual ramp festival that they have. I have never been before, but folks say that the food is out of this world.
They claim that the women up there get together and cook a wide assortment of dishes up for the people to take part in.
My favorite way to eat them is to cook them up with a skillet of fried potatoes with a piece of cornbread to go with it. It doesn't get any better than that in my book.

ramps are a pretty big deal here in eastern ky as well. there are several yearly festivals built around harvesting and eating them. they are basically wild onions and smell worse on ones breath.

my town has a yearly poke salad festival which is centered around the pokeweed which is also not very tasty.

Yep that time of the year again. They do them up right in Richwood for sure and poke, well I grew up on that. Both are good eat'in.

There are two types of wild onions locally. I dig one type. They are pretty good. The other type are ramps.

Are ramps anything like leaks? Never heard of ramps, I've eaten lots of leaks, though. And they taste like onions, chives taste like onions too.

ramps are most commonly fried with potatoes in bacon grease or scrambled with eggs and served with bacon, pinto beans, and cornbread.
