A few of you may remember using an Immersion Heater while serving in the military. It might not be a bad piece of equipment for emergency preparedness.

Boy does that bring back memories. Is crude but extremely effective for it designed use. Great price also. Thanks for sharing.
I know this is an extremely old thread but the subject is important and rather than start another thread I thought I'd resurrect this one. First, if you are looking for an immersion heater then try these guys. You won't find one cheaper anywhere and these are brand new, old stock and they offer up some options for using one.

It seemed to me that the military chow line for cleaning plates was a bit much for personal application. The military used five cans; 1. trash 2. pre-wash 3. wash 4. rinse 5 rinse and sterilize.
That's great if you are dealing with 50+ folks. The old dunk the mess kit approach is certainly a time proven one.
But if you are dealing with 2-15 people then something a bit smaller scale is in order in my opinion. Here's how I opted to handle it. I have a new propane turkey fryer that I picked up from Goodwill for about $20. I also have a propane smoker. I intend to use the burners off both and place a three gallon stainless steel pot (I have 3) on the burner to heat water. I will use a plastic 5 gallon bucket lined with a garbage bag for any scraps. The lid can then be placed on it to keep it covered when not used. Then simply use two pots, one for wash and one for rinse. The military used boiling water and I won't be using that hot of water. I'm thinking more of a modified kitchen sink. It works there so it should work here.
If you haven't given any thought to how you will handle meal clean up if you have no water/power then you might consider a similar option. You can check Craig's List or other places for propane devices like turkey fryers. All you will really need is the burner but since the turkey fryer comes with the large pot it makes it almost ideal. Just some thoughts to kick around.

Don't forget about the rubbing sand using stream water option.
Oh yeah, I can't even remember that last time I saw one of those. Are they still used?
They seem to make a load noise when being relighted. LOL
OldGI - Not used anymore. My post is for Bug In with 13 folks, some of which are kids.
