Now, I'm not an ice fisherman, but it seems that if you have to make a bridge out of pallets to get to the end of the ice flow to do your fishing it may not be the wisest choice. It is tragic that one person died in this, but it is a reminder to use common sense when out in the wilds and don't rely on "everybody else was doing it." http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/02/07/Ohio.stuck.on.ice/index.html
Unfortunately, some times stupid hurts.

Man, you think that out of 150 people someone would have known better.

My brother was out on that Lake Erie Ice the day before, he said that "bridge" was not really a bridge but a piece of plywood put down over a stress crack, which is done every year so the crack area is not worn out on the trail out. With the warm up and high winds the stress crack opened up. The ice was still connected on the east side, 5 miles away. Once one guy went through the ice on his snowmachine (the one that lost his life), everyone in the area panicked and stayed put until the coasties came in with a hover craft and took them off. There is 16-24 inches of ice still on that lake, but the cracks do make it dangerous. Also some speculation that an ice breaker in the area earlier that day did not make things better. I feel for the family of the man that died.

It is just amazing what some people will do to go ice fishing. People will head out see trouble, and keep on going anyways'. You see trucks on the ice here way before they should be there. In Maine this year, I haven't heard of any one in a vehicle going thru, but there were some guy's on sleds just riding that did, but luckily they managed to get the riders out.
Coast Guard: "Tell me again why were you out on the ice?"
Fisherman: "Fishin'".
Coast Guade: "You guys knew it was 50 degrees, right?"
Fisherman: "Uh, huh."
Coast Guard: "You do know the melting temperature of ice, don't you?"
Fisherman: "Uh, huh."
Coast Guard: "Did beer have anything to do with this?"
Fisherman: "Uh, huh."
Coast Guard: "Okay, then. I think I have all the answers I need."

1st Fisherman: "Well, geez, I mean it was the perfect weather for Ice fishing...we had beer, plywood, the ice on the lake was nice & solid looking; the weather was warming up...you couldn't ask for better weather. Yes I am a polish blonde, why do you ask?":eek::D:cool:
BTW, who saw the movie: "Never Cry Wolf"? Remember when the dude went out on the lake?

Bad decision. Preasure crack do open and get larger no matter the temp that is a risk you will take if you are fishing big water. A snowmobile can easily cross open water for some time. If you are on a four wheeler well your screwed.

Everyone is talking about those fisherman. The consensus is "their absolute fools". I guess the logic was if over a hundred thirty people do it, it can't be wrong.
