Now have two of these wonderful firearms. I had reamed the first one out to .22 Magnum. So I picked up another .22LR with the 8 3/8" Barrel. These quality firearms have target sights, target triggers and hammers. They are lighter than the newer model 617 which has the full length under-lug. Plan to put a 2.5X to 8X EER Leupold on the .22 magnum.....:)

Be advised that that the .22 Mag and .22 LR don't share the same bore size. Close but different including rifling twist.

Sometimes yes and sometimes no, an example would be the Ruger Single Six with interchangeable cylinders for Long Rifle and Magnum. Also The Colt Scout. A more important factor is cylinder indexing, to minimize spitting lead in the cylinder gap.

S&W never offered the model 17 in .22 Magnum, however they did offer a model 48 which was a target .22 Magnum.

I just spent some time researching the .22 long rifle and the .22 magnum. Every resource I've found states that both use .224 bullets. Considering the modest pressures these rounds operate at, there would be no danger in the conversion.

That is what the 300 rounds of .22 Magnum said as they went through the barrel, Dude no problem, no worries, we are out'a here.

CZ and some competition .22 LR manufacturers do make sub .224 Barrels. My CZ model 253 with single set trigger has a under size barrel. But we are only talking 1/2 of a thousandths.

I used to have one of those little aluminum framed S&W .22 long rifle pistols with 3" barrel. I ordered a .22 magnum chamber tool and opened up 4 of the chambers. Later I opened up the other 4 chambers. I used it for a few years as a trap line gun until I lost it. One day I'm gonna have to get another, if I can find one at a good price.

Forget good prices, the S&W Mod 17 if you can find one is around $700. That would buy
a lot of beer and bubble gum. I'll keep my Single Six.
