Yah my first Volcano. Almost been though every natural disaster, wonder if I'll win something if I survive them all.

In 1989 I spent 30 days on a walk'about of New Zealand, on the return flight got as far as Hawaii when Mt. Redoubt let'er rip. I got ten days hotel and three square a days at a hotel in Hawaii, compliments of Hawaiian Airlines, flights were backed up for two weeks in and out of Alaska.

Just hope it is not like the one that dumped 4 feet of ash on Kodiak.

YEP.........!!!!!

People here don't think about evacuation, because we are evacuated already in the normal sense. But if that thing dumped 4' or 6' of hot ash on south Central Alaska, there would be no flights.

And everyone on the Kenai peninsula would have to evacuate through Los Anchorage, and baby that ain't happening. Only "ONE" road out of all of the Kenai Peninsula, and one out of Anchorage.

Plus two military bases just outside Los Anchorage.

The Electric generation plant for most of Alaska is just miles from Mt. Redoubt. Think no electricity at -34* F below. No Heat, some could fly to there cabins and ride it out. But most would be SOL.

Yeah just the 5 pm traffic is at a stand still aint no getting out of Anchorage. We are as prepared as we can be, the BX was packed and out of all kinda stuff yesterday. We'll see if it blows.

West and South-west which is why Homer, Ak. generally get it more than others. However if it goes straight up to 30,K or 40,K feet it over shoots Homer.

The whole "Ring of fire" has been real active in last month. It bears watching and keeping alert. I run a weather station for the National Weather Service up here in the northern part of MN and i also get hot reports from the USGS and it's been getting alot of my attention lately. Been pretty active all around the Pacific basin. You guys up there, keep your eyes open and your bags packed!

If it does, go buy two spare air filters for your truck. And don't run your windsheld wipers with ash on the window, don't rub the snow or ash off the paint, stuff is like ground diamonds, same stuff that is in Lava hand cleaner.

Check out these live seismograph stations for Redoubt. They read like a book, left to right. Looks like they are going to have to refill them with internet ink soon!

Depends on which way the wind blows. Interesting how much of peoples life turns on which way the wind blows. Metaphorically speaking.

All preps have been gone through, extra filters for vehicles and us. I wrapped the Airstream AC unit up with plastic and tape at minus 12 the other night, that was interesting!
If it blows, we have a generator for power and firewood and coal to burn to keep us warm. Were in a small house East of Homer at the moment.
Our cooking stove is off of propane grill tanks, so we filled a couple more of those and stocked up 100gal of fresh water in jerry cans. We have plenty of food for months and if it all goes to Hell, I'm going to plug this moose that keeps hanging out by the truck. :D that should keep us from going to the grocery store for a bit.:D
I may run down to the beach with the wife and get some more coal, maybe fill a couple more cans of gas for the generator. other than that, I think we can comfortably ride out 2 weeks or so without going out of the house much.

klkak,
I should have mentioned... I brought the genny into my shop this past week and gave it a tune up and ordered 4 filters from NAPA. :D I also made a pre-filter from an older K&N somebody had on a car and didn't want to clean. I spent an hour on it and I got the element back to white. I just hosed it down with the K&N red oil yesterday.
Thanks for the thought though!

Bummer is... no place to bug out to! I need a boat! I guess she burped some ash and steam on Sunday, but we didn't see it. We have to go around the point to see that volcano. I can see two others though. :) Iliamma and Augustine, I wonder if they will rumble if Redoubt goes? I should grab someone and go trolling around the vents for monster halibut!

Not being familiar with the area - is there a chance of flooding in populated areas due to pyroclastic flow and the sudden melt off it would cause?

Mountaintrekker
03-17-2009, 07:31 PM
As far as I know, there isn't a population on that side of the bay that would be affected. Maybe some chekako (sp?) decided that would be a great place to set up shop and get away from it all... that would suck for that guy!
Funny thing... I just asked the guy I work with how to spell chekako and he looked on our atlas and proceded to spell Chicago for me. Frickin hilarious!

Send woman with money, and a case of vanilla flavored creamer, with this help there is a chance I could make it, (Talk about a Stimulus Package):):):):):)

Actually, I slept well, no earth quakes here, the first I heard of it erupting was from you'all when I turned on the computer. Appears the ash is over looping the local area.

My biggest problem is that it snowed all Sat. and Sunday total 19" on top of 10" last Tuesday.

Thanks for caring about us. Send women with money & a snow shovel.

Rick
03-23-2009, 08:55 AM
Hmmm. 29 inches of snow? Do the ducks tunnel under the snow or do you fit them with snow shoes? And what about the brown poodle? It's kind of hard to hike your leg that high. I can't even do that. Of course, there's a lot of things a dog can do that I can't. Sort of wish I was a dog, sometimes.
