Water purifier bottle

I've been thinking about buying one of these purifier bottles for my pack. Anyone care to comment on these?

I've got two (different brand). I like them for hiking, but prefer my pump filter for overnight stays. The reason - they're great to drink from, but a bit more difficult to fill a pot or billy can to cook with.

The only issue to be concerned with is suspended particles which can reduce the life of your filter. And freezing, but noone carries filters in the winter. Just use a piece of handkerchief over the opening when you scoop... simple filter. Cheers

I have a Micro Filter Water Bottle as well. It carries well in a mesh pocket and allows for instant drinking from the bottle. However, as Crash stated, they're difficult to use except for drinkig diretly from the bottle: http://www.rei.com/product/720270

The life of the filter is directly related to the quality of the water you are filtering. Silt laden water will drastically reduce the life span of the filter by clogging the pores. Pre-filtering by using a bandanna, for example, will help a lot.

Most filters will state the numbers of gallons that can be expected. Just remember that the rating is for clear water.

And don't forget there are differences in what filters will remove. Most do NOT filter out viruses and must be chemically treated if you are in an area where viruses might pose a threat such as where agricultural or urban run off is a problem. If the filter does not list viruses then it doesn't remove them.
