Anyone else carry a railroad map of north america in their pack? The bridges could be handy. Even in the backwoods.

Edit: I hope it's OK to post this link.

I was disappointed that Alaska wasn't included on this map.

One time we were riding our snow machines on the edge of the tracks, here in Alaska. We knew the train was stopped, and it was safe, we could see the train parked 1/4 mile down the valley.

Turns out it was stopped because the high speed snowplow train was coming the other way. Only time I ever truly browned my shorts. That thing was screaming, brakes locked up, double Wedge plow blowing snow 100 feet. They have wing blades that are 5 feet high and 15 feet long, and they are 4" thick steel. And the wing blades go to the dirt. My partner drove off a 40' cliff to avoid the train. I tried to stay ahead of the train, we were in a deep cut and I could not get out, he was closing very fast. At truly the last second I found a creek and drove the machine in wide open. The wing blade missed my head as I crashed into the water.

I am the poster child for never ride on the tracks. Did I say it was close. I would have looked like blood, guts, and ski-doo in a blender if the thing had hit me. Did I say I was "SUPER STUPID".

We only have one rail road. starts in Seward and goes to Fairbanks. If it was not for the Railroad built in 1915'ish, Anchorage, Akaska would not exist.

Where I live we have wood cutting maps. I always carry one. It shows every road paved and dirt in the mountains. The one i get here covers 2 counties.
