Hey, I was wondering if a .177 calibur pellet gun would kill a mag pie within ten yards. There is a bush were I am recently trapping coyotes and the mag pies keep getting caught in my traps even when my pan tension is tight. So i though i would do some hunting because they are open season. Thanks

If the pellet gun has a muzzle volosity of over about 650 fps. Yes it will kill a magpie within 20 yards.

Try moving your trap a little further away from your bait. Here is a drawing to give you some ideas.

no not a chance a .177 pellet gun has too little energy a .22 @500fps will suffice though
800fps, is min for hunting anything with a .177

Yes.

My old .177 caliber crosman 760 killed magpies out past 20 yards but I pumped it up 10 times and shot them in the head. I didn't think one of those lever action or CO2 dealies would work so I never bothered to try them.

If its one of those pump type guns it should work. I've killed desert squirrels at ten yard with one.

You can't make a statement like that without knowing how powerful his air gun is.

I have a Daisy Powerline 880 out in my garage that I often use to kill pigeons which are much bigger then a magpie. My shots are taken at about 30 yards. This .177 cal. pellet gun has a muzzle velocity of about 650 fps with the pellets I use. Ryleyboy might have a rifle that delivers 1000 fps with a 8.3 gr. pellet. In which case has enough power to kill a medium sized dog at 10 yards.

Now I happen to be a pretty good shot and I have my pellet gun sighted in for the distance I am shooting at the pigeons. I do not recommend this practice for everyone. That is why I suggested an alternative to the way the boy sets his traps.
