Tsitenha's post on campfire etiquette brought this to mind. I was taught ,at an early age, it was good portage etiquette, when crossing a portage, if you reached the other side of a portage and someone was portaging in the opposite direction - you helped them pack across.

With the advent of large groups of city people in the woods, we pretty much quit doing this after some cidiot from Chicago accused my wife of trying to steal his pack (like we'd want ANOTHER pack to haul around).

Cidiot - I've learned a new word.

Use it sparingly. Not everyone from the cities is a cidiot - but they are there.

Yes RBB is right, help out in a long portage (only if they were friendly:eek:) then if there was no hurry share a pipe, a meal, news.

Also...
Never have your lunch on portage.
Never block a portage with your canoe or gear. Pull up, unload the canoe and put packs in a spot that won't impede another's use of said portage.
Don't sit there with your canoe broadside on a portage landing trying to figure out how your GPS works...for 20 minutes.
