You can also use a vehicle battery and jumper cables to start a fire.
I have started a fire with a flash light battery and a couple of copper wires.
Of course you need something (tinder) with a low flash point.

I've started a few with batteries, not on purpose but I can guarantee batteries will start fires, blow up, weld and other neat things.

Well, when a wet cell battery explodes and kills them, or the acid blinds & disfigures them, They will be deleted from the gene'pool.

Yes it works. But it is not something I would take deliberatly to start my fires with. More of info that is good to know and save for a rainy day.
Come to think of it, I do have a small piece of steel wool with my sharping stone. I use it to clean the rust spots from my blued carbon knife. There are always batteries in my flashlight. Something else to remember.

Have seen where batteries do explode on people for doing things like this so I wouldn't mess with it too much. In a survival situation though I think it could be a good way to start a flame if you would need one. Theres a lot of videos on youtube of people starting fires with batteries.

As long as you use a small dose of common sense, you can safely start fires with 9V batteries and steel wool. What I have done in the past is pull the steel wool into a long rope like shape and then bend it into a U shape so that each end of the rope touches one of the terminals of the battery. As soon as the steel wool touches the terminals it will begin to glow just like your char cloth with flint and steel, you can then throw this onto your tinder bundle to start your fire. Just remember where you put your battery while you are building your fire, so you don't lose it. (Or accidentally drop it in the fire)

It does work, and just as quickly as the video showed. I've seen it demonstrated in a fire department class. If you want more smoke, use S.O.S. Scrubbing pads. LOL.

I've caught inmates stealing batteries and starting fire to light cigs.

I like Ron Hood's video on using a Mini-Mag Light, two small pieces of snare wire, & steel wool. The body of the flashlight keeps the batteries from blowing up in your face.:cool:

tried it myself, works fine, wouldn't depend on it.
an ex-prison guard friend showed me a convict lighter, you take a battery and a thin strip of the the foil from a cigarette pack, touch one end pos and one neg, and sure enough it'll burst into flames in about five seconds or so
